Job Title: Claims Specialist - General Liability/Pollution Environmental Liability
Job Responsibilities:
The Claims Specialist role is integral to the Harford Global Specialty (HGS) Claims Division, focusing on primary and excess claims related to general liability, excess auto liability, products liability, and pollution liability. The candidate will handle complex, high-exposure claims on Excess General Liability and Environmental policies from inception to resolution. Key responsibilities include:
- Conducting complex investigations and extensive claim file reviews.
- Determining coverage, drafting position letters, and communicating coverage positions to insureds, business partners, and legal counsel.
- Operating within prescribed authority levels to set appropriate expense and indemnity reserves, and regularly monitoring these reserves for necessary adjustments.
- Presenting cases above authority level to leadership for expense/indemnity reserve and settlement authority.
- Developing and implementing resolution strategies for high-quality outcomes.
- Proactively managing environmental consultants and/or litigation and counsel throughout the case lifecycle.
- Overseeing litigation planning, execution, budget, and bill review.
- Attending trials and mediations as necessary.
- Contributing to claim and enterprise goals by participating in ad hoc audits, projects, and product development initiatives.
- Preparing comprehensive reports and delivering presentations to senior claim leadership on case developments, policy issues, industry trends, etc.
- Collaborating with business partners to review and address claim trends.
- Addressing inquiries from agents and policyholders with a focus on superior customer service.
Education and Experience Information:
- A Bachelor’s Degree is required.
- Candidates with a JD license and specialization in environmental or construction case experience are preferred.
- A minimum of 7 years of claims experience is required, with a strong preference for candidates who have handled general liability, pollution liability, site pollution, construction, or product liability claims or environmental policies.
- Prior experience handling both primary and excess policy coverages/claims.
- Working knowledge of environmental, coverage, and tort laws.
- Strong coverage acumen, familiarity with state-specific environmental and insurance regulatory requirements.
- Superior analytical ability, organizational skills, and strategic reasoning.
- Advanced technical claim handling and negotiation skills.
- Ability to analyze coverage and liability issues, manage time limit demands, and assess extra contractual exposures.
- Effective interpersonal communication skills in both verbal and written formats.
- Ability to communicate and influence in a highly-matrixed environment.
Salary Information:
The annualized base pay range for this role is $106,400 - $159,600. This range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. The actual base pay could vary based on factors such as performance, proficiency, and competencies required for the role. The base pay is one component of the total compensation package, which may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition.
Work Arrangement:
This role offers a Hybrid or Remote work arrangement. Candidates near office locations in Hartford, CT, San Antonio, TX, Lake Mary, FL, Phoenix, AZ, and Naperville, IL are expected to work in the office three days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates not near an office will have a remote work arrangement, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise.
