Job Title: Senior Law Clerk, Fall

Job Responsibilities:
The Senior Law Clerk (SLC) position in the Public Defender's Office is a 16-week internship program. During this rotation, SLCs will conduct preliminary hearings and participate in case work in specialized areas such as Post-Conviction, Law Enforcement Accountability, and Immigration. Responsibilities include:

- Conducting legal research, reviewing legal documents, and organizing reports and exhibits for trials.
- Preparing criminal cases and participating in hearings and jury trials under the mentorship of senior-level Deputy Public Defenders (DPDs).
- Researching and applying laws, court decisions, and other legal authorities in preparing cases, opinions, pleadings, and briefs.
- Organizing legal discovery, reports, documents, and case exhibits.
- Conducting pretrial reviews of case files, interviewing potential complainants, and reporting on findings to determine prosecution viability.
- Preparing legal documents, including memoranda summarizing court decisions, and communicating with witnesses, experts, clients, and other parties.
- Interviewing clients to obtain factual, biographical, and financial information, and scheduling and preparing witnesses and clients for court appearances.

Education and Experience Information:
To qualify for this position, candidates must meet one of the following options:

Option 1:
- Have a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an approved or accredited law school.
- Be registered to take the first available bar exam following law school graduation.
- Be eligible for certification through the California State Bar (Bar) Practical Training of Law Students (PTLS) program at the time of appointment.

Option 2:
- Be currently enrolled in law school and have successfully completed the Second Year or equivalent.
- Be eligible for certification through the California State Bar (Bar) PTLS program at the time of appointment.

Applicants must provide a copy of their diploma or transcripts showing enrollment and completion of the second year or equivalent in an accredited law school. Provisional licensees are not eligible for this examination.

Salary Information:
The salary for the Senior Law Clerk position is per hour.

Additional Requirements:
- A valid California Class "C" Driver License or the ability to use alternative transportation for job-related functions.
- Light physical effort is required, including occasional lifting up to 10 pounds, and some bending, stooping, or squatting.

Application Process:

The assessment process consists of an evaluation of Training and Experience (T&E) weighted 100%, based on the candidate's education and training information provided in the application. Candidates who achieve a passing score of 70% or higher will be placed on an eligible register for six months.
