Job Responsibilities:
The primary responsibilities of a Court of Appeals Law Clerk involve significant participation in the judicial decision-making process. Law clerks are tasked with providing comprehensive legal research and case analysis for the judges of the Court of Appeals. The Court of Appeals reviews cases that have been appealed from district courts and administrative agencies. Key duties include:
- Analyzing and researching cases on appeal.
- Closely reviewing the record and transcripts from the district court.
- Evaluating opposing briefs to understand different legal arguments.
- Supplementing the legal research submitted in the briefs.
- Assisting judges in synthesizing the facts and the law through bench memoranda preparation.
- Assisting judges in drafting judicial opinions.
- Cite-checking opinions to ensure accuracy and compliance with legal standards.
Education and Experience Information:
To qualify for the position of Court of Appeals Law Clerk, applicants must meet the following educational and experiential criteria:
- Enrollment as a second-year law student is the minimum academic requirement for application.
- Graduation from an accredited law school is mandatory to commence employment.
- Both professional skills and an academic record are taken into account during the selection process.
- Strong writing and research skills are essential for this role.
- Significant legal writing experience is preferred, which may include participation on a law review or law journal.
- Judges of the court will select law clerks after a thorough review of applications and conducting interviews.
Salary Information:
The anticipated salary for the 2026-27 term for the position of Court of Appeals Law Clerk is at least per hour, which equates to $75,000 per year. The salary may be higher depending on future legislative appropriations.

- Work will be conducted at the **Members Only** located in downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota.
