Job Responsibilities:
Law clerks in the **Members Only** are tasked with a variety of responsibilities depending on the court division they serve. Generally, law clerks engage in the following duties:
- Conducting legal research and analyzing legal data.
- Preparing legal memoranda and drafting legal orders.
- Assisting judges in the preparation of opinions and legal correspondence.
- Observing judicial proceedings and attending conferences with attorneys and judges.
- Managing case files and court dockets, including motion calendars.
- Assisting with mediation and case management functions.
- Communicating with attorneys, self-represented litigants, and internal court staff.
- For Supreme Court clerks, working with justices on complex cases involving challenging legal issues.
- For Appellate Division clerks, processing emergent motion applications and proofreading published opinions.
- For Trial Court clerks, mediating small claims cases and summarizing information for judges.
- For Tax Court clerks, performing duties similar to those in the Appellate Division and trial courts, without mediating cases.
- For Assignment Judge clerks, learning all aspects of court administration and assisting with emergent motions.
Education and Experience Information:
Applicants for the law clerk positions must have graduated from a law school approved by the American Bar Association. The program is designed for recent law school graduates, defined as those who have graduated within the last four years. Applicants must possess excellent writing and analytical skills. It is advantageous to have completed a course in mediation prior to the start of the clerkship. Selected candidates will be required to provide an official, final law school transcript at the time of hire.
Salary Information:
The salaries for the 2024-2025 Court Term are provided, with the following figures for the various courts:
- Supreme Court: $76,400
- Supreme Court Appellate Division: $69,750
- Superior Court Assignment Judge: $63,950
- Superior Court Chancery Division (General Equity): $63,950
- Superior Court Law Division (Civil and Criminal): $58,900
- Superior Court Chancery Division (Family): $58,900
- Tax Court: $58,900
The salaries for the 2025-2026 Court Term will be determined based on funding availability.
Additional Information:
Law clerks may hold outside employment with prior approval as per the Code of Conduct for Judiciary Employees. A valid driver's license may be required if the operation of a vehicle is necessary for the position. . citizenship is not required, but candidates must be authorized to work in the . according to Department of Homeland Security regulations.
Applicants must agree to a thorough background check, including fingerprinting. The New Jersey First Act requires newly hired employees to establish and maintain residency in New Jersey within one year, though law clerks are exempt from this requirement during their court term.
Approximately 480 clerkships are available, with most openings in the Superior Court Law Division in civil and criminal court, and the Superior Court Chancery Division in family court.
