Title: Assistant Attorney General I, Tobacco Enforcement Section
Job Responsibilities
This role involves working as part of a team that includes investigators, auditors, attorneys, and support staff to enforce the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement, the Virginia Tobacco Escrow Statute, and related tobacco laws. The attorney must be capable of appearing in state or federal courts for both civil and criminal matters. Collaboration with other states, the National Association of Attorneys General, the Virginia Department of Taxation, and law enforcement agencies on tobacco-related issues is a key aspect of the job. Responsibilities include executing the annual tobacco manufacturer certification program, making tax and escrow-related calculations, facilitating escrow deposits from certain manufacturers, litigating enforcement actions against non-compliant manufacturers, monitoring licensed stamping agent compliance with state laws, and litigating to enforce such compliance. The attorney will also draft opinions, respond to citizen and industry inquiries, and review legislation. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary or appropriate. Some overnight travel is required for this position. The position is directed by and reports to the Chief of the Tobacco Enforcement Section.
Education and Experience Information
The successful candidate must be admitted to the Virginia State Bar. The position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills. The candidate should demonstrate proficiency in time management, ability to handle multiple concurrent tasks, strong planning and organizational skills, the ability to work independently and as a team member, the ability to organize and analyze large quantities of information, keen attention to detail, a high degree of initiative, and professional flexibility.
Salary Information
Hiring Range: Commensurate with Experience
