**Job Title: Law Clerk 2025 - 2026**
**Job Responsibilities:**
1. **Supreme Court Law Clerks:**
- Work closely with justices on complex cases involving challenging legal issues.
- Conduct legal research and prepare written memoranda on novel issues of law.
- Assist justices in the preparation of opinions.
2. **Appellate Division Law Clerks:**
- Conduct research and analyze legal data.
- Prepare legal memoranda and process emergent motion applications.
- Proofread published opinions.
3. **Trial Court Law Clerks:**
- Gain practical experience and valuable insight into the judicial process.
- Observe judicial proceedings and attend conferences with attorneys and judges.
- Mediate small claims cases and summarize information for judges.
- Receive training in mediation.
4. **Tax Court Law Clerks:**
- Perform duties similar to those in the Appellate Division and trial courts but do not mediate cases.
- Conduct legal research and draft legal documents related to tax challenges.
5. **Assignment Judge Law Clerks:**
- Learn all aspects of court administration.
- Assist with processing emergent motions.
6. **Family Division Law Clerks:**
- Conduct legal research for judges’ opinions and motions.
- Assist with remote proceedings and communicate with litigants and attorneys.
- Draft legal opinions and manage emergent applications.
7. **Civil Division Law Clerks:**
- Prepare bench memoranda for civil motions and trials.
- Conduct legal research and draft legal orders and correspondence.
- Manage the motion calendar and assist in case management functions.
8. **Criminal Division Law Clerks:**
- Conduct legal research for opinions and motions.
- Assist in drafting jury instructions, legal opinions, and sentencing memoranda.
- Manage the motion calendar and perform case management functions.
9. **General Equity (Chancery) Law Clerks:**
- Conduct legal research on substantive and procedural legal matters.
- Review case files and prepare bench memoranda.
- Draft orders and interact with counsel and litigants regarding case management.
**Education and Experience Information:**
- Candidates must have graduated from a law school approved by the American Bar Association by the time of their law clerk appointment.
- The law clerkship program is intended for recent law school graduates, defined as graduating within the last four years.
- Excellent writing and analytical skills are essential.
- Completion of a course in mediation prior to the start of the clerkship is beneficial.
- Selected candidates must provide an official, final law school transcript at the time of hire.
- Applicants who have clerked in trial or Tax Court may be eligible for an additional one-year clerkship in the Appellate Division or Supreme Court.
**Salary Information:**
- Salaries are based on a 52-week court term with an additional one-week or two-week overlap, paid at a separate weekly rate.

- Superior Court Assignment Judge: $63,950
- Superior Court Chancery Division (General Equity): $63,950
- Superior Court Law Division (Civil and Criminal): $58,900

**Supplemental Information:**
- Law clerks may hold outside employment with prior approval as per the Code of Conduct for Judiciary Employees.
- A valid New Jersey driver’s license is required if operating a vehicle is necessary for the position.

**Remote Work:**
- The Judiciary offers a hybrid work schedule with up to four days per month of remote work outside of Judiciary buildings.
