Job Title: Older Adult Staff Attorney (5k SIGN ON BONUS!)
Job Responsibilities:
The Older Adult Staff Attorney is responsible for representing individuals who are low-income and/or part of vulnerable populations, including older adults and caregivers, in a wide range of elder law matters. This position entails assisting older adults and caregivers in overcoming civil legal barriers that affect their ability to age in place. These barriers may include elder abuse, financial exploitation, consumer scams, housing issues, residential placement, age discrimination, advance health care/long-term care/estate planning, guardianship, income instability, and family law matters. The attorney will also engage in community education, senior outreach, and develop partnerships with community-based organizations to better serve the aging population.
Key responsibilities include:
- Regular client interaction, completing intakes, conducting interviews, and providing legal assistance such as brief advice, limited services, and full representation.
- Researching and interpreting laws, rulings, and regulations applicable to cases and preparing/reviewing legal writings for court or administrative agencies.
- Representing and advising clients in various civil law matters affecting their independence, including elder abuse, financial exploitation, public benefits, long-term care benefits, landlord/tenant issues, foreclosure prevention, homestead issues, debt collection, consumer scams, guardianship, age discrimination, estate planning, custody by extended family members, and dissolution of marriage.
- Developing and maintaining a referral process between community partners and the organization.
- Identifying legal needs of older adults and caregivers and developing legal educational programs to address those needs.
- Conducting training and outreach with community organization’s managers, staff, subagencies, and volunteers, and supporting the organization’s overall mission.
- Collaborating with aging and caregiver service providers and organizations, including agencies on aging, county senior services divisions, aging networks, domestic abuse organizations, law enforcement, public schools, and faith-based organizations.
- Cultivating and coordinating effective working relationships with professionals and faith or community-based organizations to ensure a positive impact on clients served and create awareness.
- Providing legal assistance ranging from pro se assistance to full representation, including drafting pro se pleadings, counseling pro se litigants through the court process, representing clients in court or before administrative agencies, conducting discovery, attending mediation, negotiating disputes, and drafting settlement agreements.
- Participating in outreach events and providing community education.
- Working a full-time position with flexible hours, including some evenings/weekends, based on business needs.
- Identifying and participating in impact advocacy that affects older adults and caregivers.
- Supervising paralegals and other subordinates in all aspects of their work.
- Performing other duties as assigned to further the organization's mission.
Education and Experience Information:
- Must be admitted to practice law in Florida and in good standing with The Florida Bar.
- A minimum of two years of experience working with low-income and/or vulnerable clients and communities on civil legal matters is preferred.
- Significant legal experience in elder law is preferred.
- Significant experience in litigation before courts and/or administrative agencies is preferred.
- Must have a demonstrable commitment to understanding and addressing issues of low-income constituents, including older adults and/or caregivers.
- Strong communication skills, writing skills, and work ethics are required.
- Must maintain professional and legal knowledge through reading and continuing education.
- Must be bondable.
- Must be able to attend meetings and/or other functions at various locations throughout the service area.
- Must be computer literate using Microsoft Office Suite.
- A valid Florida automobile license, use of own auto, and proof of insurance are necessary.
- Must be able to travel to the offices within a 12-county service area and sometimes outside of the service area.
Salary Information:
The salary for the Older Adult Staff Attorney position is between $65,000 to $85,000, plus a $5,000 sign-on bonus.
