Job Title: Deborah T. Poritz Summer Public Interest Legal Fellowship
Job Responsibilities:
- Participate in a 10-week summer program focusing on public interest legal advocacy and representation.
- Engage in client interviewing, legal and factual research, and drafting legal documents.
- Make appearances at administrative agencies and, for those who have completed two years of law school, court appearances.
- Involve in in-depth case work and brainstorming with attorneys on legal matters.
- Contribute to policy and research efforts, including client needs assessments and major litigation pleadings.
- Conduct research on issues such as education, civil rights, welfare policy, children's issues, and housing affecting economically disadvantaged individuals.
- Attend a multi-day orientation in June and a closing gathering to discuss public interest opportunities.
Education and Experience Information:
- Open to students who will have completed their first or second year of law school by May 2026.
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice through prior work, extracurricular activities, and volunteer efforts.
- Academic achievements such as grades, honors, and personal accomplishments are considered.
- Rising third-year law students are prioritized due to a special New Jersey court rule that allows them to appear in some state courts when employed by Legal Services or legal aid programs.
- Outstanding rising second-year students are also encouraged to apply.
Salary Information:
- Summer 2026 fellows will receive weekly compensation.
- Rising third-year law students will receive $1250 per week.
- Rising second-year law students will receive $1000 per week.
