Job Title: Staff Attorney (Stay Housed LA)
Job Responsibilities:
The Staff Attorney will be part of a team under the Stay Housed LA program, which is part of the Homelessness Prevention Law Project of the organization. The primary responsibilities of the Staff Attorney include:
- Providing eviction defense, pro per document preparation, and tenant counseling services under the supervision of the Supervising Attorney.
- Managing a personal caseload of unlawful detainer (eviction) cases, which involves client interviews, drafting pleadings, motions, discovery, briefs, and correspondence, negotiating with outside parties, representing clients in court, and conducting jury trials, all under supervision.
- Offering legal counsel, advice, and limited-scope representation to low-income individuals regarding evictions and related housing matters.
- Acting as a resource on unlawful detainer cases and other housing issues for other staff and partner agencies.
- Collaborating with a large network of pro bono attorneys to handle unlawful detainer cases and other housing matters.
- Engaging in community outreach by preparing and presenting trainings and participating in special projects as assigned.
- Assisting with grant reporting, billing, and outcome tracking for housing work.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Information:
- A Juris Doctor degree is required, and the candidate should be a member in good standing of the California Bar, though attorneys licensed in other states willing to sit for the next California Bar are also considered.
- 1-5 years of litigation experience is preferred.
- Experience in eviction defense is preferred.
- Familiarity with housing laws is beneficial.
- Experience with data collection and report creation is advantageous.
- Fluency in Spanish (reading, writing, and speaking) is strongly preferred.
Salary Information:
- This is a full-time, exempt position.
- The salary range for an attorney with 0–11 years of experience is $75,500–$102,900, depending on years of experience.
- The position is funded until June 30, 2025, with the potential for extended funding beyond this date.
