Job Title: Assistant Public Defender

Job Responsibilities:
Assistant Public Defenders are entrusted with the critical task of providing highly efficient and professional representation to clients within the Public Defender's Office for the Ninth Circuit, covering Orange and Osceola Counties. Key responsibilities include:

- Accepting, researching, and preparing each case in an efficient and expeditious manner.
- Advising and counseling clients regarding plea offers, their rights and options, strategies, sentencing, and appellate rights.
- Establishing and maintaining a professional relationship with each client, their family, witnesses, and court personnel.
- Maintaining open lines of communication with clients, their families, witnesses, and court personnel.
- Appropriately involving investigators, disposition specialists, interns, and other support staff in cases.
- Seeking assistance from experts relevant to the case as needed.
- Demonstrating maturity and a professional demeanor at all times, and exercising sound judgment to achieve desired results.
- Handling emergency assignments as required.
- Attending and participating in training seminars, division meetings, and staffing sessions.
- Adhering to all Public Defender policies and procedures as outlined in the manual.
- Performing other related work as required.

Education and Experience Information:
-
- Requires working knowledge of the Criminal Rules of Procedure and Statutes regarding criminal cases.
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with clients and staff.
- Proficient in grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions and procedures.
- Must exhibit sound judgment and good listening skills.
- Capable of handling matters with integrity and confidentiality.
- Must be extremely organized, able to establish priorities, and meet deadlines.
- Ability to manage a caseload using an online case management system.
- Required to travel to the jail or juvenile detention center to meet with clients.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook is necessary.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a team comprised of attorneys, investigators, and legal assistants.
- Must maintain confidentiality and uphold ethical standards in line with the Florida Bar guidelines.

Salary Information:
The salary for the position of Assistant Public Defender is $68,000.
