Job Title: Senior Law Clerk, Spring
Job Responsibilities:
- Participate in a 16-week internship program in the Public Defender's Office, with potential advancement to a Deputy Public Defender I position.
- Conduct preliminary hearings and participate in case work in areas such as Post-Conviction, Law Enforcement Accountability, and Immigration.
- Assist in preparing a variety of criminal cases, and participate in hearings and jury trials under senior-level mentorship.
- Conduct legal research, review legal documents, and organize reports and exhibits for trials.
- Research, study, interpret, and apply laws, court decisions, and other legal authorities in case preparation.
- Organize extensive legal discovery, reports, documents, and potential case exhibits.
- Conduct pretrial reviews of case files for witness subpoenas and other trial evidence.
- Conduct preliminary interviews of potential complainants in criminal cases and report findings to determine prosecution viability.
- Read, understand, and analyze legal documents such as pleadings, affidavits, court orders, transcripts, statutory codes, and appellate decisions.
- Prepare legal documents, including memoranda summarizing court decisions, administrative board decisions, state statutes, ordinances, and opinions.
- Communicate with witnesses, experts, clients, and other parties, and provide information to judges, attorneys, and the public concerning department work.
- Interview clients to obtain factual, biographical, and financial information.
- Schedule witnesses for court appearances and interviews, and prepare witnesses and clients for courtroom procedures and protocol.
Education and Experience Information:
Option 1:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an approved or accredited law school.
- Registration to take the first available bar following law school graduation.
- Eligibility for certification through the California State Bar Practical Training of Law Students (PTLS) program at the time of appointment.
Option 2:
- Currently enrolled in law school.
- Successful completion of the second year or equivalent of law school.
- Eligibility for certification through the California State Bar PTLS program at the time of appointment.
- Provide a copy of your diploma, official or unofficial transcripts showing current enrollment, indicating grade level, and successful completion of the second year or equivalent in an approved or accredited law school or the degree and date conferred.
- Applicants must produce a copy of their diploma or transcripts showing when the JD degree was conferred and proof of Bar Exam registration.
- Eligible for California State Bar certification (PTLS) requires having sat for or registered to sit for the first eligible bar exam, with results not published at the time of appointment, and registration as a law student with the California State Bar.

- The position requires a valid California Class "C" Driver License or the ability to utilize alternative transportation methods for job-related functions.
- Physical expectations include light physical effort with occasional light lifting up to 10 pounds, bending, stooping, or squatting, and considerable ambulation.
- The assessment process consists of an evaluation of Training and Experience (T&E) weighted 100%, based on education and training information provided on the online application form, Supplemental Questionnaire, and other required documents.
