Job Responsibilities:
- Interns will have the opportunity to gain practical experience in various legal fields by working in different divisions within the Office of the Attorney General.
- Responsibilities include assisting with civil investigations and litigation, reviewing proposed mergers and acquisitions, and providing antitrust counsel.
- Interns may work in the Consumer Protection Division, enforcing state and federal consumer protection laws against unfair practices.
- They may also assist in the Criminal and Capital Appeals Division, representing the State in criminal appeals.
- Interns in the Civil Litigation Division will represent the State and its agencies in various civil lawsuits and handle civil actions such as bankruptcy, corrections, and tort litigation.
- The Complex Litigation Bureau offers opportunities to work on high-impact cases involving constitutional challenges and complex management.
- Interns in the Civil Legal Services Division will provide legal services to state agencies, including representation in administrative hearings and courts.
- The Child Support Enforcement Bureau offers opportunities to establish paternity and enforce child support orders.
- Interns in the Revenue Litigation Bureau represent the Florida Department of Revenue in tax-related matters.
- The Ethics Bureau prosecutes potential violations of the Florida Code of Ethics.
- The Lemon Law Arbitration Division enforces compliance with Florida’s motor vehicle "Lemon Law."
- Interns in the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit investigate fraud involving Medicaid providers.
- The Office of Statewide Prosecution handles complex, organized criminal activity impacting multiple judicial circuits.
- The Cyber Fraud Enforcement Unit focuses on combating cybercrimes related to fraud and identity theft.
- The Office of the Solicitor General handles the State’s most sensitive litigation and supervises civil and criminal appeals.
Education and Experience Information:
- The internship program is open to students enrolled in an accredited ABA law school.
- Internships are unpaid and available for academic credit through law school-sponsored programs.
- Law students must provide documentation of eligibility for academic credit or participation in a law school-sponsored program.
- Interns are required to work a minimum of 20 hours per week or as prescribed by their college or school.
- 2nd and 3rd-year law students are expected to provide a writing sample at the time of the interview.
Salary Information:
- The internship program is unpaid.
Legal Terminology and Important Requirements:
- Interns must submit a completed application packet, including a resume, letter from an advisor or university, and an official transcript.
- A security screening, including a criminal background check, is required.
- Interns must acknowledge understanding of their voluntary unpaid status and eligibility for Worker’s Compensation benefits only.
- Interns must report any adult criminal history information, including sealed or expunged records.
- Certification is required, acknowledging that any omissions or misrepresentations in the application may disqualify the candidate.
