Job Title: Fall 2025 Law Clerk
Job Responsibilities:
- Conduct legal research and analysis.
- Perform investigations related to post-conviction proceedings.
- Draft legal memorandums, post-conviction petitions, and motions for modification.
- Interview incarcerated clients both in prison and via video conference.
- Assist attorneys, investigators, paralegals, social workers, and other support staff in providing client-centered and team-based representation.
- Engage in research, writing, witness preparation, investigations, and trial preparation.
Education and Experience Information:
- Current law school students or recent law school graduates are eligible to apply.
- Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to zealous and comprehensive public defense.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- Ability to work independently.
Application Process:
- Applications are submitted through a centralized process, but final selections are made by the Post Conviction Defender’s Division.
- Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
- Required application materials include a resume, cover letter, list of four professional references, a writing sample no longer than 15 pages, and an undergraduate transcript.
- Application materials must be emailed within a couple of days of submitting the form but no later than August 1, 2025.
- This is an in-person position, and all students must start the clerkship by September 2, 2025, and work for at least 10 weeks.
- Law clerk opportunities exist during the spring semester (January-May), fall semester (September-December), and summer (May-August).
Salary Information:
- These positions are unpaid volunteer positions.
- OPD offers support for externs seeking credits for their work as well as sponsorship for grant or other outside funding applications.
Additional Information:
- Law clerks are fully integrated into trial teams and gain hands-on experience.
- The position is designed to provide law students with comprehensive advocacy experience.
- Law clerks are expected to commit to working consistent days and hours for the duration of the clerkship.
