Job Responsibilities:
The Fall 2025 Law Clerk position at the **Members Only** within the Juvenile Protection Division involves a range of responsibilities aimed at advocating for youth within the justice system. Law clerks will work closely with Juvenile Defenders on various aspects of case preparation, gaining valuable skills and experience essential for a career as a criminal defense attorney. Key responsibilities include:
- Observing proceedings in Juvenile Court to gain firsthand understanding of the legal process.
- Drafting modification motions to support case developments.
- Locating and interviewing witnesses to gather crucial information for case preparation.
- Visiting clients in detention and placements to maintain communication and gather insights.
- Drafting letters and memos to assist in case documentation and communication.
- Assisting with case development both in and out of the courtroom to ensure comprehensive advocacy.
- Conducting research to support case strategies and legal arguments.
Law clerks are considered vital members of the defense team and will receive training on child development, best practices, and insights into successful juvenile reform efforts across the nation. The internship experience is tailored to align with the academic and professional goals of the individual.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates for the Law Clerk position are expected to be current law students or recent law school graduates. The application process is open to students who display strong written and oral communication skills, adaptability in dynamic environments, and a strong work ethic. Preference is given to applicants with experience working with juveniles and those who have completed coursework in Criminal Procedure.
Law clerks have the opportunity to join OPD during the spring, summer, or fall, with applications accepted on a rolling basis. Final selections are made by the District Offices based on candidates' preferences regarding office placements throughout the State of Maryland. It is important to note that only the Montgomery County and Baltimore City offices are accessible via public transportation.
Salary Information:
The Law Clerk position is an unpaid volunteer role. However, OPD supports externs seeking academic credits for their work and may sponsor grant or other outside funding applications where applicable.

The **Members Only** offers a hands-on experience for law students, integrating them into trial teams where they work alongside attorneys, investigators, paralegals, social workers, and other support staff. Law clerks engage in significant research and writing, witness preparation, investigations, and trial preparation, contributing to comprehensive client-centered representation.
