Job Title: Senior Attorney

Job Responsibilities:
The Senior Attorney/Assistant Counsel position in the organization's Counsel's Office involves a diverse range of responsibilities. These include:

- Assisting the Attorney General’s Office in litigation involving the organization in both State and federal courts.
- Defending the agency in discrimination cases.
- Appearing on behalf of the organization in various proceedings and hearings.
- Drafting and interpreting legislation and regulations.
- Assisting in procurements and drafting and reviewing contracts, Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs), Invitations for Bids (IFBs), and Requests for Proposals (RFPs).
- Conducting legal research and providing legal analysis.
- Advising agency business units on legal matters.
- Responding to correspondence and inquiries from courts, attorneys, law enforcement, regulated businesses, and customers.
- Serving on agency project teams, including those involving the interpretation and/or implementation of laws.
- Participating in training of court clerks, judges, and/or members of the law enforcement community.
- Performing additional legal duties as required.

Education and Experience Information:
- Admission to the New York State Bar is mandatory.
- A minimum of 24 months of subsequent satisfactory legal experience is required.
- Candidates with relevant specialized experience may be eligible for an increased hiring rate.
- The preferred candidate should possess strong research and writing skills, sound judgment, and excellent oral communication skills.
- Relevant specialized experience includes knowledge of Vehicle and Traffic Law, Licensing of motorists and motor vehicle service providers, Insurance Law, Human Rights Law, Equal Employment Opportunity, Freedom of Information, and Personal Privacy Protection.
- Legal experience with case review and analysis, litigation, contract negotiations, and drafting briefs, legislation, rules, regulations, and contracts is also desirable.

Salary Information:
- The salary range for this position is $96, to $121, per year.

Additional Information:
- This position is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS), which allows for non-competitive appointments without requiring an examination. Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications for the title they apply for.
- It is anticipated that employees hired under the NY HELPS Program will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status within one year of permanent appointment, without the need to take a civil service test.
- Employees in this role can participate in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
