Litigation Management Counsel
Job Responsibilities
The Litigation Management Counsel is responsible for direct communication with the Company concerning evaluations and recommendations related to complex and high exposure litigation against the Company. Key responsibilities include:
- Coordinating and overseeing outside counsel in trial and appellate work.
- Evaluating, assessing, designing, and implementing litigation strategies in collaboration with defense counsel.
- Ensuring that litigation against the Company is managed consistently, efficiently, and effectively.
- Assisting handling attorneys with matters of procedure and substantive law, including pleadings, discovery matters, and policy coverage questions.
- Working closely with the Company to assess litigation for extra contractual exposure and educating Claims personnel on legal issues related to Claims practices.
- Reporting on trends and providing recommendations related to managed litigation.
- Consulting with claims personnel on selected claims.
- Completing evaluations and investigations on complex and high exposure cases.
- Identifying areas and issues that may expose the Company to risk.
- Recommending strategies and settlements in complex litigated matters.
- Attending litigation conferences, arbitration hearings, settlement conferences, and trials.
- Monitoring outside counsel to ensure adherence to litigation plans.
- Working with assigned outside legal counsel to ensure litigation against the Company aligns with the objectives of the litigation.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Information
Education Requirements:
- A Juris Doctor (JD) degree is required.
- Active membership in a State Bar in the state where the position is located or registered as in-house counsel in California.
Experience Requirements:
- A minimum of seven years as an attorney.
- Preferred candidates will have five years of experience advising senior-level management, litigating or managing insurance bad faith matters, serving as in-house counsel for an insurance company, and delivering training on legal or claims issues.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including exceptional presentation skills.
- A highly collaborative working style with a commitment to meeting individual and team goals.
- Strong internal and external customer service ethics, focusing on identifying and implementing solutions to complex business and legal challenges.
Salary Information
Farmers offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience, qualifications, and location.
- California Only: $119,920 - $191,290
- Colorado Only: $112,720 - $164,890
- Hawaii/Illinois/Minnesota/Vermont Only: $112,720 - $176,550
- Massachusetts Only: $112,720 - $176,550
- Maryland Only: $112,720 - $176,550
- New York/District of Columbia/New Jersey Only: $112,720 - $191,290
- Albany County: $119,920 - $164,890
- Washington Only: $112,720 - $200,625
