Job Title: Staff Attorney
Job Responsibilities:
The Staff Attorney is tasked with delivering legal services for the organization, which includes providing legal supervision to assigned advocate/investigators. This role involves offering legal representation to clients and the organization in various forums, such as administrative hearings, state and federal courts, as well as state agency and legislative meetings. Additionally, the Staff Attorney is responsible for advocacy, education, outreach, and other services related to disability issues. This position offers the opportunity to work with a dynamic organization dedicated to protecting and advocating for the rights of individuals with disabilities.
Education and Experience Information:
Minimum Qualifications:
- A passion for working on behalf of people with disabilities.
- Membership in the Florida Bar, with eligibility or membership in the Florida . District Courts and the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.
- Basic understanding of civil rights laws, including the Americans with Disabilities Act, Rehabilitation Act, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, and Fair Housing Act.
- Knowledge of current state and federal law, regulations, court and administrative procedure, as well as rules of professional conduct.
- Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking professionally in English, with a working knowledge of correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, and legal citation.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Sound professional judgment and the ability to interface effectively with staff at all levels, maintaining productive working relationships. Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team with other professionals.
- Proficiency with electronic legal research systems.
- Experience working with and/or sensitivity to persons with disabilities, particularly in institutional settings.
- Proficiency with PC and Microsoft operating systems and Microsoft Office, especially Word, and familiarity with client databases and data reporting.
- Availability to travel, sometimes on short notice, throughout Florida, including rural areas.
- Government clearance by the United States Government Office of Personnel Management is required.
- A favorable background check is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A passion for working with mission-driven organizations.
- Prior work experience with a public organization, non-profit organization, law firm, or similar experience.
- Knowledge of and experience working with people with disabilities.
Salary Information:
The starting salary for the Staff Attorney position is $73,000, which may be higher depending on experience.
