Job Responsibilities
- Interns in the Office of the General Counsel (OGC) will conduct research and assist attorneys across four specialized legal practice groups: Appellate, Chapter 11, Consumer, and General and Administrative.
- Responsibilities include drafting and editing memoranda, USTP guidance and policy papers, court pleadings, and appellate briefs.
- Interns will participate in moot courts to prepare attorneys for trial and work on matters related to Ethics, Freedom of Information Act, Privacy Act, and Administrative Procedures Act.
- They will observe Congressional hearings and prepare summaries for senior leadership.
- Field Office interns will assist attorneys in preparing for bankruptcy court appearances, developing bankruptcy fraud referrals, and handling attorney misconduct.
- Additional tasks involve screening cases for debtor abuse of the Bankruptcy Code, reviewing documents in chapter 7, 11, and 13 cases, and assisting with drafting and filing motions and objections.
- Interns will provide litigation support, attend bankruptcy hearings, and monitor section 341 meetings between debtors and creditors.
Education and Experience Information
- Candidates should be rising second or rising third-year law students.
- Applicants must have excellent research and writing skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to fairness and integrity in the administration of the bankruptcy system.

Salary Information
- This is an uncompensated student volunteer position.
- Academic credit and transit subsidies may be available.
Additional Information
- Interns must generally commit to 10 to 16 hours per week for at least 10 weeks, from September to December.
- Specific hours will be determined by each office with some flexibility available.
- The application period for the Spring 2026 session ends on August 31, 2025, and applications will be reviewed as they are received.
