Job Title: Deputy District Attorney II
Job Responsibilities:
The Deputy District Attorney II is responsible for performing a variety of professional legal work involved in criminal prosecution, including investigation, trial preparation, and legal research. The position requires incumbents to evaluate evidence and facts from reports filed by law enforcement officers or petitioners to determine the nature of crimes committed and authorize the issuance of criminal complaints. Responsibilities also include interviewing prospective witnesses, developing cases for prosecution, preparing trial briefs, and engaging in trial practice. Additionally, the Deputy District Attorney II presents and prosecutes cases before County courts, represents the people of the County at arraignments, preliminary hearings, and trials, and negotiates with defense attorneys regarding the disposition or modification of charges. The role also involves conducting legal research, preparing briefs and opinions, and training and advising lower-level attorneys in the preparation and presentation of cases.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must have active membership and be in good standing with the State Bar of California. Members in good standing of the California State Bar who have been assigned a license number but have inactive membership status, as well as candidates licensed out of state pending California Bar Exam results/license, are welcome to apply. An active California Bar license will be required prior to hire. The minimum experience required for the Deputy District Attorney II position is one year of criminal trial experience as an attorney or two years of trial experience as an attorney.
Salary Information:
The salary range for the Deputy District Attorney II position is - hourly, $4, - $4, biweekly, $9, - $10, monthly, and $109, - $120, annually. Candidates assigned to the Victorville or Joshua Tree offices may be eligible to receive an additional incentive of $77 per pay period, which amounts to $2002 annually.
The salary posted is the range for the II-IV levels, with Deputy District Attorney III and IV having higher salary ranges. Deputy District Attorney III has a salary range of $126,464- $139,568 annually, and Deputy District Attorney IV has a salary range of $150,051- $201,531 annually.
Additional Information:
The position is full-time, with opportunities for promotional advancement within the series in accordance with criteria established in the Memorandum of Understanding.
