Job Title: Summer Legal Intern
Job Responsibilities:
- Legal interns will be placed in the Family Support Court Magistrate unit, which operates statewide.
- Interns will work under the supervision of the Division of Public Defender Services.
- Interns who are law students and eligible for certification under Practice Book Section 3-14 et seq. may have the opportunity to appear in court.
- Interns are expected to participate in a mandatory orientation session, which may be held in-person or virtually at the start of each term.
- Interns will be involved in various legal tasks, potentially including research, drafting legal documents, assisting in case preparation, and other duties as assigned by supervisors.
Education and Experience Information:
- The internship is open to law students and undergraduate students interested in legal careers.
- Law students must be eligible for certification under Practice Book Section 3-14 et seq. to appear in court.
- Applicants must be currently enrolled in a law school or undergraduate program and should check eligibility requirements with their school Dean.
- A background check is required for all students who will be interning with the division.
Salary Information:
- All internships offered under this program are unpaid.
Additional Information:
- Interns are encouraged to apply to multiple field offices simultaneously if they are interested in more than one location.
- The Division of Public Defender Services accepts applications on a rolling basis, with specific submission guidelines for each semester:
- Summer internships: Submit paperwork beginning in January.
- Fall internships: Submit paperwork beginning in April.
- Spring internships: Submit paperwork beginning in August.
- Applications should include an intern application form, a cover letter, and a current resume.
- Interns should be prepared for a comprehensive verification process, including education and criminal history checks.
