NJOPD offers a unique and rewarding internship experience for law students looking to gain practical experience and training in the legal field. As an intern, you will have the opportunity to work closely with attorneys, investigators, and staff in providing top-notch legal representation to indigent individuals. From conducting legal research and analysis to participating in client interviews and courtroom proceedings, you will be exposed to a variety of tasks and responsibilities that will enhance your skills and knowledge.
About NJOPD
NJOPD is dedicated to providing first class legal representation to individuals at both the trial and appellate levels. Our attorneys defend individuals charged with criminal offenses, represent parents whose children have been removed, advocate for individuals involuntarily committed to psychiatric facilities, and provide representation to those seeking post-conviction relief. Additionally, our attorneys also work with clients in Recovery Court and Intensive Supervision Program matters, as well as in our Forensic Science Unit.
Responsibilities
As an intern with NJOPD, you will assist attorneys and staff in case preparation, litigation, and ongoing and/or systemic projects related to the representation of our clients. Some of your responsibilities may include:
- Conducting legal research and analysis
- Drafting motions, briefs, memoranda, and reports
- Assisting with trial preparation
- Participating in client and witness interviews
- Observing and appearing in courtroom proceedings
- Attending training programs
Qualifications
To be eligible for an internship with NJOPD, you must be a law student who has completed 2 years of law school. Additionally, you must possess strong research, writing, and communication skills, as well as a passion for justice and advocacy for the underrepresented.

In your cover letter, please explain why you are interested in interning with NJOPD, your areas of interest, any geographic preferences or limitations, and your availability (including anticipated start/end date, number of hours, and schedule).
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and must be submitted between June 15th and July 31st for Fall internships, between October 15th and November 30th for Spring internships, and between December 15th and April 15th for Summer internships. All applicants must also undergo an interview with regional office and/or the Internship Coordinator, complete confidentiality and ethics paperwork, and be screened and approved before being offered an internship with NJOPD.
