Job Title: Law Clerk
Job Responsibilities:
Law clerks in the **Members Only** have the opportunity to work in various courts, including the Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Superior Court, and Tax Court. The responsibilities of law clerks vary depending on the court to which they are assigned:
1. Supreme Court Law Clerks:
- Work with justices on complex cases involving difficult issues of law.
- Perform legal research and prepare written memoranda on novel issues.
- Assist justices in the preparation of opinions.
2. Appellate Division Law Clerks:
- Conduct research and analyze legal data.
- Prepare legal memoranda and process emergent motion applications.
- Edit and proofread published opinions.
- Prepare weekly memos and handle emergent applications.
- Assist judges with additional research projects.
3. Superior Court Assignment Judges:
- Learn all aspects of court administration.
- Assist with processing emergent motions.
- Conduct research and prepare legal memos.
- Manage the judge’s docket and communicate with counsel and courthouse staff.
4. Trial Court Law Clerks (Civil, Criminal, Family, General Equity):
- Gain practical experience by observing judicial proceedings.
- Attend conferences with attorneys and judges.
- Receive training in mediation and mediate small claims cases.
- Summarize information for judges.
- Conduct legal research and draft legal orders and opinions.
5. Tax Court Law Clerks:
- Perform duties similar to those in the Appellate Division and trial courts.
- Review and process motions filed with the court.
- Conduct legal research to inform judges’ opinions and motions.
- Draft case management orders and other legal documents.
Education and Experience Information:
- Applicants must have graduated from a law school approved by the American Bar Association by the time of their law clerk appointment.
- The Judiciary's law clerkship program is intended for recent law school graduates, defined as those graduating within the last four years.
- Excellent writing and analytical skills are essential.
- Completion of a course in mediation is beneficial, but not mandatory.
- Selected candidates will be required to provide an official, final law school transcript.
Salary Information:
- Supreme Court: $76,400
- Supreme Court Appellate Division: $69,750
- Superior Court Assignment Judge: $63,950
- Superior Court Chancery Division (General Equity and Family): $63,950
- Superior Court Law Division (Civil and Criminal): $58,900
- Tax Court: $58,900
Additional Information:
- Approximately 480 clerkships are available each year.
- Law clerks are not subject to the New Jersey residency law during their court term but must be mindful of residency requirements if they move into another state position after the clerkship.
- Law clerks may hold outside employment with prior approval as provided in the Code of Conduct for Judiciary Employees.
- The Judiciary offers a hybrid work schedule, allowing for up to four days per month of remote work.
- Applicants must complete the application process fully and as instructed, including providing detailed work experience and education information.
- Selected candidates must agree to a thorough background check, including fingerprinting.
- US citizenship is not required, but candidates must be authorized to work in the US.
