Job Title: Senior Law Clerk, Spring
Job Responsibilities:
The Senior Law Clerk (SLC) position is part of a 16-week internship program within the Public Defender's Office, offering a pathway to permanent employment as a Deputy Public Defender (DPD) I. This program provides law school graduates with practical legal experience under the supervision of senior-level DPDs. Essential duties include:
- Conducting legal research, studying, interpreting, and applying laws, court decisions, and other legal authorities in case preparation.
- Organizing extensive legal discovery, reports, documents, and potential case exhibits.
- Conducting pretrial reviews of case files for evidence and witness subpoenas.
- Conducting preliminary interviews with potential complainants in criminal cases to assess if sufficient cause exists for prosecution.
- Reading, analyzing, and understanding legal documents such as pleadings, affidavits, and court orders.
- Preparing a variety of legal documents, including memoranda summarizing court decisions and opinions.
- Communicating with witnesses, experts, clients, and other parties to perform duties and provide information to judges, attorneys, and the public.
- Interviewing clients to obtain factual, biographical, and financial information.
- Scheduling and preparing witnesses and clients for court appearances and interviews.
Education and Experience Information:
There are two options for eligibility:
Option 1:
- Have a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an approved or accredited law school.
- Be registered to take the first available bar exam following law school graduation.
- Be eligible for California State Bar Practical Training of Law Students (PTLS) certification at the time of appointment.
Option 2:
- Be currently enrolled in law school.
- Have successfully completed the second year or equivalent of law school.
- Be eligible for PTLS certification at the time of appointment.
Candidates must provide proof of their JD degree or law school enrollment and completion of the second year or equivalent. Applicants must also show proof of registration for the California Bar Exam.

Additional Information:
- The position requires a valid California Class "C" Driver License or the ability to use alternative transportation methods to carry out job-related functions.
- The role involves light physical effort, including occasional light lifting and considerable ambulation.
- The assessment process includes an evaluation of training and experience weighted 100%, based on the candidate's education and training information provided in the application form, supplemental questionnaire, and supporting documents.
