Job Title: Law Clerk 2025 - 2026

Job Responsibilities:
Law clerks in the **Members Only** will have the opportunity to work closely with judges, attorneys, court staff, and litigants, gaining hands-on experience in a court environment known for its progressive and innovative work. The responsibilities vary depending on the court division:

1. **Supreme Court Law Clerks**:
- Work with justices on complex cases involving difficult issues of law.
- Perform legal research, prepare written memoranda on novel legal issues, and assist in the preparation of opinions.

2. **Appellate Division Law Clerks**:
- Conduct research, analyze legal data, prepare legal memoranda, process emergent motion applications, and proofread published opinions.
- Prepare weekly memos, edit opinions, handle emergent applications, and assist with additional research projects.

3. **Trial Court Law Clerks**:
- Gain practical experience and valuable insight into the judicial process by observing judicial proceedings and attending conferences with attorneys and judges.
- Receive training in mediation, mediate small claims cases, and summarize information for judges.

4. **Tax Court Law Clerks**:
- Perform duties similar to those assigned to law clerks in the Appellate Division and trial courts.
- Review and process motions, conduct legal research, draft case management orders, manage the motion calendar, and assist with remote proceedings.

5. **Assignment Judge Law Clerks**:
- Learn all aspects of court administration and assist with processing emergent motions.
- Conduct research, prepare legal memos, manage the judge’s docket, and communicate with counsel and courthouse staff.

6. **Family Division Law Clerks**:
- Conduct legal research for judge’s opinions and motions, assist with remote proceedings, communicate with self-represented litigants and attorneys, and assist judges in drafting legal opinions and orders.

7. **Civil Division Law Clerks**:
- Prepare bench memoranda for civil motions, conduct legal research, draft legal orders, manage the motion calendar, and assist with drafting legal opinions.

8. **Criminal Division Law Clerks**:
- Conduct legal research, assist in drafting jury instructions and legal opinions, draft legal orders, manage the motion calendar, and perform case management functions.

9. **General Equity (Chancery) Law Clerks**:
- Conduct legal research, review case files, prepare bench memoranda, draft orders, proofread judge's orders and opinions, and interact with counsel and litigants regarding case management and procedural issues.

Education and Experience Information:
Applicants must have graduated from a law school approved by the American Bar Association by the time of their law clerk appointment. The law clerkship program is intended for recent law school graduates, defined as graduating within the last four years. Excellent writing and analytical skills are essential. It is helpful to have completed a course in mediation prior to the start of the clerkship. Selected candidates will be required to provide an official, final law school transcript, not a photocopy, which includes the date of graduation from their law school at the time of hire.

Salary Information:
Salaries for the 2024-2025 Court Term are provided, with the 2025-2026 salaries to be determined based on funding availability:
- Supreme Court: $76,400
- Supreme Court Appellate Division: $69,750
- Superior Court Assignment Judge: $63,950
- Superior Court Chancery Division (General Equity): $63,950
- Superior Court Law Division (Civil and Criminal): $58,900
- Superior Court Chancery Division (Family): $58,900
- Tax Court: $58,900

Additional Information:
- Law clerks may hold outside employment with prior approval as provided in the Code of Conduct for Judiciary Employees.
- A driver's license valid in New Jersey is required only if the operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
- US citizenship is not required, but selected candidates must be authorized to work in the US.
- A thorough background check, including fingerprinting, is required for individuals selected for clerkships.
- The "New Jersey First Act" mandates that all persons newly hired by the Judiciary within one year must establish and maintain principal residence in New Jersey, with exemptions available under specific conditions.
- Approximately 480 clerkships are available annually, with a limited number in the Supreme Court, Superior Court Appellate Division, and other specialized courts. Most openings exist in the Superior Court Law Division in civil and criminal court, and Superior Court Chancery Division in family court.
- The Judiciary offers a hybrid work schedule, potentially allowing up to four days per month of remote work outside of Judiciary buildings, requiring high-speed internet access and the installation of a multifactor authentication app.
