Job Title: Capital Habeas Unit Attorney

Job Responsibilities:
The Capital Habeas Unit Attorney is tasked with providing zealous legal representation for indigent prisoners on Alabama’s Death Row. This representation is carried out in federal habeas proceedings across Alabama’s three United States District Courts, the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. The key responsibilities include:

- Managing a caseload with cases at various stages of post-conviction review.
- Writing briefs, motions, and other legal pleadings.
- Reviewing extensive trial and appellate records.
- Developing legal claims and litigation strategies.
- Advocating during evidentiary hearings and oral arguments.
- Collaborating as a member of a case team.
- Conducting case-related investigations.
- Meeting with clients, experts, witnesses, and family members.

The role requires participation in Trial Unit Duty Day assignments, training events for the private bar, and community outreach post appropriate training.

Education and Experience Information:
Applicants must possess excellent written and oral advocacy skills and demonstrate the ability to work effectively within a defense team. Good organizational skills and proficiency in computer-based research are essential. While prior experience is not mandatory, any previous experience in capital habeas cases, law practice, or federal clerkships is considered beneficial. Applicants must be members in good standing of a State Bar by the initial hire date and must hold a valid driver’s license with appropriate motor vehicle insurance. Some overnight travel for investigative purposes is required.

Salary Information:
The salary for the Capital Habeas Unit Attorney position is dependent on the candidate’s experience and is comparable to those offered to positions within the Office of the . Attorneys. The position comes with excellent benefits, and flexible work hours and remote work options are available. However, attorneys in this office are prohibited from engaging in private law practice.
