Job Responsibilities:
- Interns will gain hands-on experience in the practice of law and oral advocacy by working in prosecutors’ offices.
- Interns will handle in-court assignments that are typically managed by assistant prosecutors.
- They will engage in activities such as plea negotiations, bench trials, formal hearings, and case reviews.
- Interns may also attend various family court proceedings.
- There is an opportunity for interns to prepare and conduct one or more jury trials during the summer.
- Interns will represent the People of the State of Michigan in court proceedings pursuant to Michigan Court Rule .
- Interns are expected to complete the 11-week internship and adhere to the assignments similar to those given to new assistant prosecutors.
Education and Experience Information:
- Applicants must be law students who have completed at least 40 credit hours of law school by May 8, 2026.
- Candidates should be in good standing in their law school and must have at least one semester or term of law school remaining after the internship.
- Preference is given to candidates who have completed courses in criminal law, criminal procedure, and evidence by May 2026.
- Applicants must be Michigan residents or demonstrate an intent to practice in Michigan upon graduation.
- Candidates should have an articulable interest in the criminal justice system, specifically in the field of prosecution.
Salary Information:
- Interns will receive a salary of $9, for 11 weeks of work, based on a 40-hour workweek at a rate of per hour.
- Interns are not paid during the four-day training and orientation period; however, training costs, including most meals and materials, are covered.
- Lodging will be provided at no cost for interns living more than 50 miles from the training area.
Additional Information:
- The internship program is administered by the Prosecuting Attorneys Coordinating Council (PACC), a state agency responsible for providing training and technical assistance to Michigan’s county prosecutors and their staff.
- PACC's executive staff will interview and recommend intern candidates to host county prosecutors, who will make the final hiring decision.
- Interns are required to attend a four-day training and orientation in May 2026, which will provide an overview of legal subjects and trial advocacy.
- The program offers approximately 20 internships each summer across various locations in Michigan.
- Increased flexibility regarding geographic location improves the odds of being selected for an internship.
- Intern positions are at-will, and each intern serves at the pleasure of the host county prosecutor.
Application Process:
- The application deadline for direct applicants is September 26, 2025.
- Applicants attending law schools where PAAM participates in on-campus interviews must submit applications through that process.
- Required pre-interview materials include a cover letter, resume, PAAM’s pre-interview survey, law school transcript (unofficial is acceptable), and a writing sample.
