Job Title: Deputy District Attorney III
Job Responsibilities:
- Perform professional legal work involved in criminal prosecution, including investigation, trial preparation, and legal research.
- Evaluate evidence and facts from reports filed by law enforcement officers or petitioners.
- Determine the nature of crimes committed and authorize the issuance of criminal complaints.
- Interview prospective witnesses and develop cases for prosecution.
- Prepare trial briefs and engage in trial practice.
- Advise law enforcement officers and the public regarding criminal complaints.
- Present and prosecute cases before County courts and the Grand Jury.
- Represent the people of the County at arraignments, preliminary hearings, and trials.
- Negotiate with defense attorneys concerning the disposition or modification of charges.
- Conduct legal research and prepare briefs and opinions.
- Train and advise lower-level attorneys in the preparation and presentation of cases.
- Provide vacation and temporary relief as required.
Education and Experience Information:
- Must have active membership and be in good standing with the State Bar of California. Candidates with inactive membership status or those licensed out of state pending California Bar Exam results/license are welcome to apply. An active California Bar license will be required prior to hire.
- For Deputy District Attorney II: One year of criminal trial experience as an attorney, or two years of trial experience as an attorney.
- For Deputy District Attorney III: Two years of criminal trial experience as an attorney, or three years of trial experience as an attorney.
- For Deputy District Attorney IV: Three years of criminal trial prosecution experience as an attorney, or four years of trial experience as an attorney.
Salary Information:
- Deputy District Attorney II: $109,116 - $120,452 Annually
- Deputy District Attorney III: $126,464 - $139,568 Annually
- Deputy District Attorney IV: $150,051 - $201,531 Annually
- Additional incentive of $77 per pay period ($2002 annually) for assignments to Victorville or Joshua Tree offices.
Conditions of Employment:
- Assignments may be made to any location in the County depending on department needs.
- Candidates must pass an extensive background investigation, which may include a credit check, fingerprint check, and medical exam.
- Must be an active member in good standing with the State Bar of California at the time of hire and maintain this status to remain employed in this classification.
- San Bernardino County does not provide visa sponsorships for candidates.
