Job Responsibilities:
Law clerks in the **Members Only** system play a vital role in assisting judges across various courts, including the Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Superior Court, and Tax Court. Responsibilities vary depending on the specific court but generally include:
- Conducting legal research and analyzing legal data.
- Preparing legal memoranda and drafting opinions.
- Assisting in the management of court dockets and case management functions.
- Observing judicial proceedings and attending conferences with attorneys and judges.
- Performing duties related to court administration and processing emergent motions.
- Engaging in mediation training and mediating small claims cases (for trial court clerks).
- Communicating with attorneys, self-represented litigants, and court staff.
- Assisting with remote proceedings and moderating virtual court sessions.
Education and Experience Information:
Applicants for the law clerk position must have graduated from a law school approved by the American Bar Association. The program is designed for recent law school graduates, defined as those who have graduated within the past four years. Candidates must possess excellent writing and analytical skills. Completion of a course in mediation is beneficial, as trial court law clerks who will serve as mediators must complete Judiciary-sponsored mediation training or its equivalent.
Salary Information:
Salaries for the 2024-2025 court term are specified as follows, with adjustments for the 2025-2026 term to be determined based on funding availability:
- Supreme Court: $76,400
- Supreme Court Appellate Division: $69,750
- Superior Court Assignment Judge: $63,950
- Superior Court Chancery Division (General Equity): $63,950
- Superior Court Law Division (Civil and Criminal): $58,900
- Superior Court Chancery Division (Family): $58,900
- Tax Court: $58,900
Additional Information:
- The Judiciary offers a hybrid work schedule, allowing up to four days per month of remote work outside of Judiciary buildings, contingent on having high-speed home internet access and installing a multifactor authentication app.
- Law clerks must be authorized to work in the . according to Department of Homeland Security regulations.
- A thorough background check, including fingerprinting, is required for selected individuals.
- Law clerks may hold outside employment with prior approval in accordance with the Code of Conduct for Judiciary Employees.
