Job Title: Senior Principal IP Legal Counsel-Diabetes
Job Responsibilities:
The Senior Principal IP Legal Counsel will provide intellectual property legal support to the company's Diabetes Operating Unit. Responsibilities include implementing global IP strategies, developing strategic IP portfolios for medical technologies, and supporting product development and research through proactive IP counseling and education. The role involves supporting M&A activities, licensing transactions, and advising clients in R&D and the business on various IP matters. The counsel will deliver clear, concise, and actionable legal advice and must communicate intellectual property advice effectively to management.
Key duties include:
- Executing all aspects of creation and management of intellectual property.
- Preparing and prosecuting a patent portfolio worldwide in support of global business and IP strategies.
- Interfacing with R&D and business development teams for proactive development and implementation of IP strategies.
- Managing invention disclosures and prioritizing filings with the highest level of impact.
- Leveraging existing patent applications to develop IP assets that accommodate an evolving competitive landscape.
- Supporting management of IP risk, including performing global freedom-to-operate evaluations and overseeing the preparation of opinions of counsel.
- Providing support on patent litigation, pre-suit assessments, and patent office proceedings.
- Assisting in drafting and negotiating IP agreements, such as patent licensing agreements and joint-development agreements.
- Determining if invention should be protected as a patent or trade secret.
- Developing thoughtful patent searching strategies for patentability, invalidity, and competitive landscape.
- Ensuring ongoing awareness of competitors’ products, activities, and IP portfolio.
- Operating within budget constraints for outside counsel and third-party vendor spend.
- Developing strategic relationships with operating unit leaders, marketing, business development, and R&D.
- Managing stakeholder expectations through proactive and clear communications.
- Partnering with various functions to perform landscaping activities for future opportunities.
- Educating key internal stakeholders on IP activities and strategy execution outcomes.
- Developing strategic relationships and managing outside counsel to accomplish key deliverables.
- Partnering across the IP team to share and leverage insights and best practices.
- Partnering with IP Centers of Excellence (litigation, business development, trademarks, data/AI, and patent portfolio strategy) to deliver optimal outcomes.
- Coordinating with operating unit commercial legal to align on a cohesive legal strategy.

Education and Experience Information:
- Juris Doctor (.) from a nationally accredited law school with strong academic credentials.
- 8+ years of experience as an attorney in the intellectual property law discipline.
- Licensed to practice in at least one US state or the District of Columbia.
- Registered to practice before the . Patent and Trademark Office.
Preferred qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Chemistry, or similar scientific disciplines, medical device experience, both in-house and law firm experience, and proficiency in engineering, creative abilities, and scientific principles.
Salary Information:
The company offers a competitive salary and flexible benefits package. The salary range for this position in the . (excluding Puerto Rico) is $197, - $296,. The position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Incentive Plan (MIP) and an annual long-term incentive plan. The base salary range applies across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California, and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States, with local market compensation and benefits applying for others.
