Job Title: Senior Law Clerk, Fall
Job Responsibilities:
The Senior Law Clerk (SLC) position is a 16-week internship program within the Public Defender's department, offering an opportunity for advancement into a permanent role as a Deputy Public Defender (DPD) I. SLCs will engage in various tasks, including conducting preliminary hearings, participating in specialized case work areas like Post-Conviction, Law Enforcement Accountability, and Immigration. Under the supervision of senior-level DPDs, SLCs will assist in preparing a wide array of criminal cases, partake in hearings, and potentially participate in jury trials. Specific duties include:
- Researching and applying laws, court decisions, and other legal authorities in case preparation
- Organizing legal discovery, reports, documents, and potential case exhibits
- Conducting pretrial reviews and preliminary interviews to determine prosecution viability
- Analyzing legal documents such as pleadings, affidavits, and court orders
- Preparing legal documents, including memoranda and opinions
- Communicating with witnesses, experts, clients, and other parties involved in cases
- Interviewing clients to gather factual, biographical, and financial information
- Scheduling and preparing witnesses and clients for court appearances
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must meet one of the following educational and experiential criteria:
Option 1:
- Possess a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
- Be registered to take the first available bar exam following law school graduation
- Be eligible for certification through the California State Bar Practical Training of Law Students (PTLS) program at the time of appointment
Option 2:
- Be currently enrolled in law school
- Have successfully completed the second year or equivalent of law school
- Be eligible for certification through the California State Bar PTLS program at the time of appointment
Candidates must provide a copy of their diploma or transcripts to show current enrollment and successful completion of the second year or equivalent in an accredited law school. Proof of registration for the Bar Exam is also required.
Salary Information:
- The position offers a salary of hourly.
Additional Requirements:
- A valid California Class "C" Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation is required.
- Physical expectations include occasional light lifting up to 10 pounds, and some bending, stooping, or squatting.
Assessment and Application Process:
- The assessment consists of an evaluation of Training and Experience (T&E) based on the candidate's education and training information.
- Eligible candidates achieving a passing score of 70% or higher will be placed on an eligible register for six months.
