The **Members Only** is currently offering internship opportunities for law students interested in gaining hands-on experience in the legal field. As an intern, you will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced attorneys, investigators, and staff in providing legal representation to indigent individuals. This is an excellent opportunity to gain real-world experience and receive mentorship and training from professionals in the field.

Our team of attorneys defends individuals facing criminal charges, represents parents whose children have been removed due to allegations of abuse or neglect, and advocates for individuals involuntarily committed to state psychiatric facilities, among other areas of practice. Internship Responsibilities
As an intern with NJOPD, you will assist attorneys and staff with various tasks related to the representation of our clients. This may include conducting legal research and analysis, drafting legal documents, assisting with trial preparation, participating in client and witness interviews, and attending training programs. You may also have the opportunity to observe and even appear in courtroom proceedings under the supervision of NJOPD attorneys.
Internship Requirements and Application Process
NJOPD is looking for 2Ls and 3Ls who are interested in gaining practical experience in the legal field. To apply, please email your cover letter, resume, and writing sample (for law students only) to our Internship Coordinator, Dana Lane, at ****. Your cover letter should include the following information:
- Why you are interested in an internship/externship with NJOPD
- Your practice area(s) of interest
- Any geographic preferences or limitations
- Your availability, including anticipated start/end date, number of hours, and schedule
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and must be submitted between June 15th and July 31st for fall internships, between October 15th and November 30th for spring internships, and between December 15th and April 15th for summer internships. Please note that all applicants must undergo an interview with the regional office or Internship Coordinator, complete confidentiality and ethics paperwork, and be approved before being offered an internship/externship with NJOPD.
