Job Title: Assistant City Attorney

Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant City Attorney, under the guidance of the City Attorney and Deputy City Attorney, is tasked with a diverse range of legal functions. The role involves providing legal counsel and expertise to various city departments, committees, and commissions, and representing the city in litigation, negotiations, and other legal proceedings. Key responsibilities include:

- Offering professional legal services to various divisions or departments within the city.
- Preparing and drafting legal documents such as ordinances, resolutions, motions, briefs, contracts, and agreements; ensuring compliance with legal requirements.
- Serving as an advisor to city departments and divisions, providing necessary legal counsel to protect the city's interests.
- Researching and preparing opinions on legal issues for city departments, governing boards, or officials; drafting responses to inquiries regarding city legal matters.
- Investigating claims and complaints by or against the city and recommending necessary actions.
- Representing the city in administrative hearings and in municipal, state, and federal courts; defending suits and claims filed against the city.
- Preparing cases and representing the city at hearings before boards and commissions as needed.
- Negotiating contracts and agreements with private parties, governmental bodies, and state and county agencies.
- Performing trial preparation duties, including organizing case information, analyzing evidence, interviewing witnesses, and developing arguments.
- Ensuring maintenance of accurate and complete files and records related to litigation, legal opinions, and professional information.
- Performing special projects requiring knowledge of municipal law and related legal issues.
- Exercising sound and ethical judgment in decision-making processes.

Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must possess a combination of experience, education, and training that provides the requisite background for the role. The specified qualifications include:

Experience:
- A minimum of one year of experience in municipal and civil law is preferred.

Education and Training:
- A Juris Doctorate degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association is required.

Licenses or Certificates:
- Active membership in good standing with the Washington State Bar Association is mandatory.
- Must possess, or obtain within one month of hire, a Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Awareness Certification and maintain certification throughout employment.
- Must possess, or have the ability to possess within one month of hire, a Washington State Driver’s License.

Salary Information:
The salary for the Assistant City Attorney position ranges from $8, to $10, monthly, which translates to an annual salary range of $102, to $128,.

Work Environment:
The work environment for the Assistant City Attorney involves physical demands representative of those encountered in performing essential job functions.
