Summary:

The Legal Aid Society's Civil Practice is seeking a Staff Attorney for their Education Law Unit and Disability Advocacy Project in their Brooklyn office. The staff attorney will report to the supervising attorneys and provide special education advocacy to children with disabilities, as well as representation in SSI and SSDI cases for children and adults. The position requires a Juris Doctor degree, admission to the New York State Bar, and at least 3 years of experience in advocacy for low-income individuals and immigrants. The salary range for this position is $83,844 - $147,907 and the organization offers a generous benefits package including health insurance, paid vacation, and loan forgiveness programs.

Key Responsibilities:

- Provide client representation in city, state, and federal court proceedings, administrative and educational hearings, and affirmative litigation
- Conduct training, community outreach, and education to individuals, local community-based organizations, and education and housing advocates
- Attend educational meetings and special education mediations
- Advocate for policy changes on behalf of clients
- Coordinate and collaborate with other groups and organizations
- Represent the Civil Practice and Legal Aid in the community
- Conduct community education, training, and outreach to promote the work of the office, Education Law Practice, Disability Advocacy Project, and Civil Practice
- Work with pro bono lawyers
- Conduct off-site intake, including evening hours
- Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

- Juris Doctor degree and at least 3 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Admission to the New York State Bar
- Experience in and/or commitment to advocacy for low-income people and immigrants
- Experience assisting individuals in crisis is desirable
- Excellent written and oral advocacy skills
- Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask
- Ability to work independently and in a team and manage a large workload
- Ability to coordinate and collaborate with other groups and organizations

Preferred Qualifications:

- Proficiency in languages other than English, especially Spanish, is desirable
