Job Responsibilities
The Head of Construction Defect Claims is responsible for leading a large team in handling all aspects of construction defect claims. This includes managing the development and performance of the Construction Defect (CD) Claim teams, ensuring the quality, accuracy, and timely resolution of complex and severe liability claims. The role involves continuously developing talent by creating opportunities for team members to grow and strengthen their skills. Additionally, the Head of Construction Defect Claims monitors team performance to identify and address problematic trends, escalates issues to operational leadership, and recommends solutions to enhance operational efficiency. The position advocates for a culture committed to identifying process efficiencies and continuously improving work completion methods.
This role requires demonstrating a passion and vision for an effective and engaged employee culture by selecting top talent, delivering continuous coaching, recognizing employees to reinforce behaviors that ensure service excellence, and holding others accountable for team development. The Head of Construction Defect Claims is responsible for advocating for claims customer service excellence by understanding and exceeding stakeholders’ expectations. This includes identifying changes in claim best practices and workflows, developing training solutions to embed and sustain those practices, and identifying technological changes to support practice execution. The role also involves collaborating with business partners internally and externally to ensure profitable growth, developing coverage acumen, and proactively managing team litigation.
Education and Experience Information
Candidates for the Head of Construction Defect Claims position should have significant experience in claims leadership roles within the insurance industry, with substantial experience in Construction Defect claim management. Multi-jurisdictional expertise is required. A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience is necessary, with an advanced degree, such as a Juris Doctor (.), being preferred. The ability to manage a diverse group of claims teams across multiple locations is essential. The position involves directly managing and guiding a team of Managers responsible for overseeing all aspects of claims handling. Regular participation in claims roundtable discussions focusing on coverage, liability, and damage assessment issues is expected.
Candidates should possess strong communication skills, with the ability to present to senior leadership. Leadership skills are crucial, including the ability to plan, organize, delegate, and develop direct reports. The role requires persuading and influencing people through superior written and oral communications, effectively explaining concepts, challenging ideas, and advocating for one's point of view. Emotional intelligence and self-awareness are important attributes, along with an openness to change, inviting feedback related to performance, and constructively dealing with criticism.
