Job Responsibilities
Research Attorneys at the organization are tasked with performing high-quality and timely legal research on behalf of judicial officers. Their responsibilities include:
- Reviewing writs, pleadings, petitions, and motion papers.
- Conducting thorough research and analysis of the law.
- Preparing concise and organized memoranda with recommendations to the Court.
- Providing Court Operations with legal opinions and responding to requests for legal research from various departments.
- Handling a high volume of work with short deadlines.
- Reviewing, analyzing, and making recommendations in post-conviction matters.
- Serving as legal advisors to judicial officers or court management on specific matters, including preparing written memoranda and/or opinions.
- Using a computer to manage case work, perform legal research, and prepare memoranda.
- Training and mentoring other attorneys or interns as needed.
- Representing the court on task forces and State and national organizations as delegated.
- Determining probable cause for holding arrestees for further proceedings and coordinating the issuance and processing of Emergency Protective Orders, on occasion.
Education and Experience Information
- Active membership in the State Bar of California is required for all levels of the Research Attorney position.
- For the Associate Research Attorney level, no prior experience is required.
- For the Research Attorney level, one to two years of experience as an Associate Research Attorney with the organization or another California court, or at least three years post-California Bar civil litigation experience, is required.
- For the Senior Research Attorney level, at least seven years of full-time, recent post-bar experience as an attorney is required, with two years of that experience being with the organization or another California court.
- Candidates must possess a solid grasp of criminal procedure and criminal law and motion, with significant experience handling felony cases.
- A self-edited writing sample must be submitted with the application.
- Desirable qualifications include at least five years of recent experience in criminal legal research and writing, proficiency in online, web, and Windows-based legal research applications, and excellent research and writing skills.
Salary Information
- The salary for the Research Attorney position ranges from to hourly, $10, to $13, monthly, and $126, to $161, annually.
- Research Attorneys may have the opportunity to promote to Senior Research Attorney upon meeting established criteria, with a salary of up to $183, annually.
Additional Information
- The position offers a combination of telework and on-site work assignments, with telework being completed from a pre-designated home-based location within California. Telework arrangements are at the sole discretion of the Court.
- Benefits include a choice of five medical plans, vacation and sick leave packages, a $3,500 Optional Benefit Plan (OBP), a defined benefit retirement plan, a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA), 14 paid holidays per year, tuition reimbursement, dental and vision plans, and an optional deferred compensation program (457 plan).
