Job Title: Managing Director, Business Incentives Group
Job Responsibilities:
An STS Business Incentives Group Managing Director is responsible for providing written tax advice to clients, evaluating, and recommending alternate courses of action to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, recognizing potential tax risks, and identifying potential changes in tax policy and regulations. The role involves marketing, networking, and business development within the director's area of expertise and specialization, and maintaining and expanding key client relationships. The Managing Director is a crucial part of the office's or region's Tax Services leadership team, acting as a guide on complex tax questions and issues.
Job Duties:
Research:
- Identify situations requiring research and conduct appropriate investigations.
- Analyze researched facts and utilized sources.
- Prepare studies of tax implications and outline alternative courses of action for clients.
- Develop comprehensive sales Talking Points documents for marketing and sales opportunities.
Tax Compliance:
- Ensure clients comply with applicable authorities while identifying options for minimizing the client's tax and reporting burdens.
- Identify “gray areas” and recognize related risk potential for contingent tax liabilities.
- Complete pro forma Forms 6765 and related state forms.
- Ensure tax engagement letters are adopted prior to engagement work commencing.
- Communicate with appropriate clients, Core Tax Services, and Assurance personnel regarding issues during reviews.
Tax Consulting:
- Develop, recommend, and implement standard tax methods to provide clients with maximum tax benefits.
- Identify and assist in maximizing all potential BIG credit, deduction, and other federal and state opportunities legally available to clients.
- Handle inquiries from federal and state agencies regarding all tax issues and questions.
- Draft responses to examiner questions and challenges.
- Monitor implementations of work plans for tax consulting projects.
- Provide assistance with protests at the appeals level.
- Provide recommended solutions by combining tax knowledge with business/industry knowledge.
Tax Controversy:
- Represent clients before any tax authority on contested issues.
- Respond to all questions from federal or state agencies.
Tax Related Software:
- Utilize Caseware, GoSystems, tax research databases, and other tax-related software.
Tax Specialization:
- Develop an in-depth understanding of the technical and practical issues and opportunities regarding BIG tax benefits.
- Act as an industry expert in BIG.
- Identify cross-selling opportunities with other tax specializations.
- Manage BIG services provided to assigned clients.
- Develop tools and improvements for enhancing the efficiency or services of the BIG practice.
ASC740-10:
- Understand and apply industry standards, firm policies, and BDO Tax Quality Manual requirements as they relate to FAS 109 and FIN48.
- Recognize, measure, and document financial benefits to clients.
Strategy Development:
- Develop new or improved ideas to advance the position of clients, the company, or company personnel through a reduction in taxes or expenses or offering of non-tax benefits.
- Research and implement new tax strategies.
- Lead marketing campaigns and external BIG initiatives.
Other duties as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Supervise the day-to-day work of STS BIG Managers, Senior Associates, and Associates on assigned engagements and review work products.
- Ensure STS BIG Managers, Senior Associates, Associates, and Interns are trained on all relevant tax issues and software.
- Evaluate and work effectively to enhance the performance of STS BIG Managers, Senior Associates, and Associates and assist in their professional development.
- Deliver performance feedback and complete performance evaluations for STS BIG Managers, Senior Associates, Associates, and Interns.
- Act as Career Advisor to STS BIG Managers, Senior Associates, and Associates, as appropriate.
Education and Experience Information:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, required.
- Master’s degree in Taxation, preferred.
- Juris Doctorate (.), preferred.
Experience:
- Ten or more years of prior experience in Research & Development tax consulting, required.
- Prior experience supervising tax professionals on a project or engagement basis, required.
- Prior experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions, preferred.
- Prior experience with corporate taxation, consolidations, and partnerships, preferred.
License/Certifications:
- CPA certification or other relevant certification, preferred.
Software:
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word.
- Experience with tax-related software and research databases such as Caseware, GoSystems, and other comparable programs.
Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Superior analytical and research skills.
- Solid organizational skills, especially the ability to meet project deadlines with a focus on details.
- Ability to successfully multi-task while working independently or within a group environment.

- Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with internal and client personnel.
