Legal Internship

Since 1956, we have provided free legal help for more than 1 million low-income individuals and families. Our services cover a wide range of civil issues, including housing, family law, public benefits, consumer fraud, healthcare, children’s well-being, special education and relief from domestic violence. We have also expanded our services to meet the specific needs of immigrant and refugee families, veterans, community economic development and small-business and minority entrepreneurs. With five offices located across Missouri, we serve 21 counties from the Iowa border to Potosi.
Legal Internship
Our legal interns are an integral part of the team at Legal Services of Eastern Missouri. As an intern, you will work in one program for the entire summer or semester. Your duties will vary depending on the needs of your assigned program, but may include:
- Shadowing attorneys in court, including at hearings, status conferences, trials and settlement negotiations
- Attending client meetings and making phone calls to clients with case updates or to obtain information
- Drafting pleadings for new cases, assisting with discovery in ongoing cases, and drafting and serving subpoenas
- Conducting research on legal issues for specific cases or for more systemic or ongoing projects
- Writing legal memoranda summarizing research findings
- Drafting policy letters and writing papers
- Assisting in preparing for and attending community education and outreach presentations/events
