Job Description:
- As a legal intern at Legal Services of Eastern Missouri, you will be an important part of our team.
- You will work in one program for the entire summer or semester, depending on your availability.
- Your duties will vary based on the needs of the program, but may include shadowing attorneys in court, attending client meetings, drafting legal documents, conducting legal research, and assisting with community education and outreach events.
Salary Information: This is an unpaid internship.
Experience Requirements: No previous legal experience is required, but a passion for social justice and helping those in need is preferred.
Responsibilities:
- Shadow attorneys in court, including hearings, status conferences, trials, and settlement negotiations.
- Attend client meetings and make phone calls to provide case updates or obtain information.
- Draft pleadings for new cases, assist with discovery in ongoing cases, and serve subpoenas.
- Conduct research on legal issues for specific cases or larger projects.
- Write legal memoranda summarizing research findings.
- Draft policy letters and papers.
- Assist with community education and outreach events.
Qualifications:
- Must be currently enrolled in law school or a recent graduate.
- Excellent research, writing, and communication skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks.
- Strong interest in social justice and helping low-income individuals and families.
