Job Title: Law Clerk 2025 - 2026
**Job Responsibilities:**
1. **Supreme Court Law Clerks:**
- Work with justices on complex cases involving difficult issues of law.
- Perform legal research, prepare written memoranda on novel issues, and assist in the preparation of opinions.
2. **Appellate Division Law Clerks:**
- Conduct research, analyze legal data, prepare legal memoranda, process emergent motion applications, and proofread published opinions.
- Prepare weekly memos, edit opinions, handle emergent applications, and assist judges with research projects.
3. **Trial Court Law Clerks:**
- Gain practical experience by observing judicial proceedings, attending conferences, and receiving mediation training.
- Mediate small claims cases and summarize information for judges.
4. **Tax Court Law Clerks:**
- Perform duties similar to those in the Appellate Division and trial courts, excluding mediation.
- Review motions, conduct legal research, draft legal documents, and manage the motion calendar.
5. **Assignment Judge Clerks:**
- Learn court administration aspects and assist with processing emergent motions.
- Conduct research, prepare legal memos, manage dockets, and communicate with counsel and courthouse staff.
6. **Family Division Clerks:**
- Handle complex cases involving children, youth, spouses, and domestic partners.
- Conduct legal research, assist with remote proceedings, draft opinions and orders, manage adjournment requests, and handle emergent applications.
7. **Civil Division Clerks:**
- Prepare bench memoranda, perform legal research, draft orders, edit legal correspondence, manage the motion calendar, and assist with case management functions.
8. **Criminal Division Clerks:**
- Conduct legal research, assist in drafting jury instructions and legal opinions, manage the motion calendar, and perform case management functions.
9. **General Equity (Chancery) Clerks:**
- Conduct legal research on substantive and procedural matters, prepare bench memoranda, draft orders, proofread opinions, interact with counsel, and assist in processing emergent temporary restraining order applications.
**Education and Experience Information:**
- Must have graduated from an ABA-approved law school by the time of appointment.
- The program is intended for recent law school graduates, defined as those graduating within the last four years.
- Excellent writing and analytical skills are essential.
- Completion of a mediation course is beneficial; trial court law clerks serving as mediators must complete a Judiciary-sponsored mediation training or its equivalent.
**Salary Information:**
- Supreme Court: $76,400
- Supreme Court Appellate Division: $69,750
- Superior Court Assignment Judge: $63,950
- Superior Court Chancery Division (General Equity): $63,950
- Superior Court Law Division (Civil and Criminal): $58,900
- Superior Court Chancery Division (Family): $58,900
- Tax Court: $58,900
**Additional Information:**
- Approximately 480 clerkships are available annually.
- Remote work is possible up to four days per month with high-speed internet access required.
- Applicants must be authorized to work in the US and may be subject to a background check, including fingerprinting.
- Residency in New Jersey is required within one year of hire, with exemptions possible based on hardship or employer critical need.
- Law clerks may hold outside employment with prior approval.
