Job Title: Felony Public Defender

Job Responsibilities:
The Felony Public Defender at the organization is responsible for providing a full range of legal services to indigent defendants in assigned felony, juvenile, and misdemeanor courts. The primary responsibility of the role is handling felony caseloads. Additional duties include assisting with juvenile cases, mental health dockets, misdemeanor cases, trial preparation and trials, and appeals as directed. The Felony Public Defender will review new cases, prepare cases for court representation, meet with defendants regarding legal issues, and routinely visit jails to meet with incarcerated defendants. They will negotiate plea arrangements with counsel for the state, prepare files and represent clients in pretrial motions and hearings, consult with clients regarding legal processes, and prepare cases and witnesses for trial. The defender will also represent clients in bench and jury trials, prepare and file appellate briefs, and appear in appellate courts when necessary. All other duties will be performed as assigned.

Education and Experience Information:
The position requires a Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited school of law. Candidates must demonstrate a track record of resolving felony cases. Additionally, candidates must have a license to practice law in the State of Texas and possess a valid Texas driver's license along with a reliable motor vehicle.

Salary Information:
The annual salary for the Felony Public Defender position is $96,. Additional compensation may be considered depending on experience. The minimum salary is listed as $3, biweekly.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
Candidates should have the skill and ability to manage a demanding and diverse caseload assigned by the Chief Public Defender. Strong oral and written communication skills are essential, along with the ability to exercise sound legal analysis and judgment.

The Felony Public Defender will work in a well-lighted, air-conditioned environment with prolonged periods of sitting and periodic walking, standing, bending, and reaching. The role occasionally requires lifting up to 15 lbs. and demands visual acuity, hearing ability, and manual dexterity.
