Job Title: Attorney
Job Responsibilities:
The Attorney at the reputed firm is responsible for providing legal advice and support to the Deputy General Counsel, leadership, and staff on matters related to 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations. Key duties include:
- Offering guidance on nonprofit legal and compliance issues concerning grants, contracts, lobbying, media law, and risk management for fiscally sponsored projects.
- Collaborating with staff and fiscal sponsorship teams to identify legal and business risks, ensuring compliance with applicable laws while advancing business objectives.
- Supporting the development and implementation of organizational policies, procedures, document templates, and training materials to promote compliance with laws, policies, and best practices.
- Advising on compliance with laws governing political activity, lobbying, and campaign finance.
- Overseeing registrations and reporting to maintain good standing with federal and state corporate and charity regulators, ensuring compliance with tax laws and intellectual property registrations.
- Providing general support to resolve routine legal or regulatory-related issues and drafting various legal and corporate documents.
- Staying updated on developments in relevant legal areas and managing outside counsel as necessary.
- Undertaking special projects as assigned.
Education and Experience Information:
- A license to practice law in California is required.
- A . degree and a minimum of seven years of experience in a legal or related role are necessary.
- Strong preference for experience in tax-exempt organizations law and policy, particularly 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations.
- Expertise in negotiation, drafting, analyzing, and advising on grants and contracts.
- Experience with compliance related to charitable fundraising, political activity, lobbying, and campaign finance.
- Experience advising leadership on legal matters, including risk management, and managing grantmaking and contracting disputes.
- Experience managing external legal counsel engagement and working in-house at a nonprofit is preferred.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, excellent written and oral communication skills, and a strong client service orientation are required.
- Ability to work independently, proactively identify and prioritize needs, research and develop solutions, and establish effective relationships with colleagues.
Salary Information:
The starting salary range for the Attorney position is $150,000 to $180,000, commensurate with related work experience and qualifications. The reputed firm provides a competitive compensation package, including:
- An alternate Fridays off work schedule (40 hours one week, 32 hours the next).
