Job Title: Staff Attorney
Job Responsibilities:
The Staff Attorney position at the organization involves a range of responsibilities focused on protecting the legal rights of marginalized residents in Connecticut, particularly low-income adults with mental health conditions. The primary duties include:
- Representation of patients at Connecticut Valley Hospital in Middletown, requiring a presence in the Middletown office five days per week.
- Providing legal assistance related to clients' treatment and civil rights.
- Advocating zealously on behalf of clients, especially those on locked units at state-operated psychiatric hospitals.
- Conducting case analysis, litigation, decision-making, and strategizing.
- Prioritizing workload effectively in collaboration with the legal director for litigation in state and federal courts.
- Collaborating with persons in recovery and community organizations to identify and address systemic issues.
- Efficiently documenting legal work through data entry and maintaining effective communication.
Education and Experience Information:
The position requires the following education and experience qualifications:
- A law degree and a license to practice law in Connecticut, with eligibility to practice in both state and federal courts.
- At least two years of experience in litigation, housing law, and/or disability rights is preferred.
- Bilingual skills are strongly preferred.
Salary Information:
The salary for the Staff Attorney position is commensurate with experience. For an attorney with two years of relevant experience, the salary is $64,800. The compensation is competitive with other nonprofit legal services organizations in Connecticut. Additionally, the organization offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes:
