Gain valuable experience in the field of legal affairs with an unpaid internship at the **Members Only** (DCF). Our Student Intern Program offers college students the opportunity to gain real-world experience in courses related to social work, psychology, management support services, and more. As an intern, you will provide direct and indirect services in various Local and Area Offices, as well as in the CP&P and DCF Central Offices.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for our unpaid internship program, you must be a current college student. However, please note that certain factors may disqualify you from consideration, such as fingerprinting, background checks, and a driving record with five points or more within the past five years. These factors may include a conviction for driving under the influence or three or more motor vehicle violations or license suspensions within the last five years, excluding parking violations.

Legal Affairs Internship

As an intern for the Office of Legal and Legislative Affairs, you will be responsible for various tasks within several units. We expect our interns to have excellent writing skills and the ability to communicate professionally with a variety of agencies. Your duties may include conducting legal research and summarizing Appellate and Supreme Court Decisions that impact the department. Additionally, you will work closely with two units within the office.

Administrative Hearings Unit

The Administrative Hearings Unit (AHU) processes written statewide requests for administrative appeals regarding substantiated and established findings of abuse/neglect, Office of Licensing actions, relative resource denials, DDD eligibility and service needs, and adoption/KLG subsidy denials. As an intern, you will assist in the process of reviewing cases to determine appeal eligibility and help write Final Agency Decisions after an Office of Administrative Law hearing.

Immigration Unit

You will also work closely with the immigration unit, which assists Department staff with immigration issues facing the populations we serve. This may involve providing education to local offices and other Department employees on topics such as special immigrant juvenile status and U-Visas. You may also network with other local, state, and federal agencies and stakeholders to facilitate access to available immigration services for our clients.
