Job Title: Civil Practice Legal Intern - Fall 2025

Job Responsibilities:
The Civil Practice Legal Intern will assist attorneys in the Civil Practice department at the organization. The primary responsibility is to support attorneys working to improve the lives of low-income New Yorkers by helping them obtain and maintain essential needs such as housing, healthcare, food, and subsistence income or self-sufficiency. The interns will contribute to enhancing family and community stability by resolving various legal issues, including but not limited to anti-eviction, domestic violence, family law, immigration, employment, tax, health, elder law, HIV/AIDS, and consumer law.

Interns will work under the supervision of Civil Practice attorneys and are required to undergo mandatory supervision. They will have opportunities to attend intern trainings, webinars, and Continuing Legal Education (CLE) sessions relevant to their internship. Specific duties may include:

- Drafting motions, pleadings, memoranda of law, and affidavits
- Conducting legal research
- Attending court and administrative hearings with attorneys
- Assisting with client interviews
- Performing other duties as assigned

Education and Experience Information:
- Applicants must be current 2L or 3L law school students in good standing.
- Participation in a relevant clinical program or prior work experience is preferred but not mandatory.
- A demonstrated commitment to and interest in serving racially and socioeconomically oppressed communities is required.
- Candidates should have the ability to work collegially and collaboratively with all staff members.
- Applicants must be capable of managing multiple tasks and deadlines and possess critical thinking skills.
- Fluency in languages other than English, particularly Spanish, is helpful but not required.

Salary Information:
The internship is non-paid; however, eligible interns have the opportunity to receive a $1,000 stipend from the Howard Rossbach fund. This stipend was established in memory of Judge J. Howard Rossbach to support interns demonstrating financial need and lacking funding for their internship at the organization. The stipend is awarded through a lottery system, supporting 4-5 interns annually. To be eligible for this stipend, interns must:

- Be enrolled as degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate students at an accredited institution.
- Complete the Howard Rossbach Internship Stipend Form when submitting their internship application.
- Be accepted to participate in an internship program at the organization.
- Demonstrate financial need and lack funding for their internship.
- Submit a statement reflecting their strong interest in working at the organization upon graduation.
