**Job Title**
Misdemeanor Deputy Public Defender (Attorney II)

**Job Responsibilities**
Misdemeanor Deputy Public Defenders are tasked with representing clients charged with misdemeanors. Their responsibilities include:
- Interviewing and advising misdemeanor clients or individuals about their constitutional rights and other pertinent information relevant to existing criminal charges or prospective criminal complaints.
- Advising clients on legal rights, including immigration consequences.
- Analyzing case material, initiating investigations, and interviewing witnesses, local authorities, and others who have information or testimony essential to the development and presentation of the defense.
- Conducting legal research as required.
- Studying, interpreting, and incorporating laws, court decisions, and other legal authorities in the preparation of cases.
- Appearing in court and representing clients charged with misdemeanors at court hearings.
- Preparing, arguing, and conducting misdemeanor jury trials.
- Conferring with prosecuting staff, probation authorities, and court officials to discuss pleas, modifications of charges, presentation, and examination of documents and material prior to trials.
- Preparing and submitting documents regarding applications for probation, appeals of court findings, writs, and other legal documents on behalf of clients.

**Education and Experience Information**
For the position of Attorney II, candidates must have:
- A minimum of six (6) months of experience as an Attorney I, or three (3) years’ experience in the general practice of law, which may be substituted for the six (6) months of criminal law experience.
- Passed the California State Bar and possess a valid bar license.
- Possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License.
- Successfully complete and pass a background investigation at the time of initial hire.

**Salary Information**
The salary for the position of Misdemeanor Deputy Public Defender (Attorney II) is as follows:

- Biweekly: $3, - $5,
- Monthly: $7, - $11,
- Annually: $88, - $142,

**Additional Information**
This full-time and part-time position is part of the Classified Service of the County and is assigned to the County Attorney's Association bargaining unit for labor relations purposes. Full-time attorneys receive professional development expenses reimbursed up to $900 each County fiscal year, yearly state bar dues paid by the County, and paid professional leave up to 60 hours per year.

Candidates are required to serve a twelve-month probationary period, which may be extended an additional six months, for a total of eighteen months. Part-time extra-help is a provisional classification where permanent status may not be obtained. This position is subject to overtime, standby, shift, and callback assignments and will perform related duties as assigned.

The application process includes an application review and screening, followed by an oral examination. Successful candidates will be placed on an eligible list for the classification, which is effective for six months and may be extended up to eighteen months. Final appointment is conditional upon successfully passing a County paid pre-employment drug screening (if applicable for the position) and a job-related background investigation.
