Job Title: Law Clerk 2025 - 2026

Job Responsibilities:

1. Supreme Court and Appellate Division Law Clerks:
- Work with justices on complex cases involving difficult issues of law.
- Conduct research and analyze legal data.
- Prepare legal memoranda and process emergent motion applications.
- Proofread published opinions.

2. Superior Court Assignment Judge Law Clerks:
- Learn all aspects of court administration.
- Assist with processing emergent motions.
- Observe judicial proceedings and attend conferences with attorneys and judges.
- Receive training in mediation and mediate small claims cases.
- Summarize information for judges.

3. Trial Court Law Clerks:
- Gain practical experience in the judicial process.
- Observe judicial proceedings and attend conferences with attorneys and judges.
- Receive mediation training and mediate small claims cases.
- Summarize information for judges.

4. Tax Court Law Clerks:
- Perform duties similar to those assigned to law clerks in the Appellate Division and trial courts.
- Do not mediate cases.

5. Hybrid Work Schedule:
- May qualify for up to four days per month of remote work.
- Requires high-speed home internet access and a multifactor authentication app on a phone or tablet.

Education and Experience Information:

- Must have graduated from a law school approved by the American Bar Association by the time of appointment.
- The program is intended for recent law school graduates, defined as graduating within the last four years.
- Excellent writing and analytical skills are essential.
- Completion of a course in mediation is helpful but not required.
- Selected candidates will be required to provide an official, final law school transcript, not a photocopy, which includes the date of graduation at the time of hire.

Salary Information:

- Supreme Court: $76,400
- Supreme Court Appellate Division: $69,750
- Superior Court Assignment Judge: $63,950
- Superior Court Chancery Division (General Equity): $63,950
- Superior Court Law Division (Civil and Criminal): $58,900
- Superior Court Chancery Division (Family): $58,900
- Tax Court: $58,900

Supplemental Information:

- Law clerks may hold outside employment with prior approval as provided in the Code of Conduct for Judiciary Employees.
- A valid driver's license is required if the operation of a vehicle is necessary for the position.
- US citizenship is not required; however, candidates must be authorized to work in the US.
- Individuals selected for clerkships must agree to a thorough background check, including fingerprinting.
- Law clerks are not subject to the New Jersey residence law during their court term.
- Approximately 480 clerkships are available each year, with positions in the Supreme Court, Superior Court Appellate Division, Superior Court Assignment Judges, Superior Court Chancery Division, and Tax Court.

Application Process:

- Applicants must create an account in the Law Clerkship portal and submit applications and materials through the portal.
- Law school career services staff or professional recommenders can upload letters of recommendation directly into the portal.
- Applications will be re-opened on June 10, 2024, for the 2025-2026 court term.
- Applicants will be contacted directly by justices or judges for interviews beginning June 17, 2024.

Clerkship Opportunities:

1. Supreme Court:
- Highest appellate court in New Jersey.
- Law clerks perform legal research, prepare written memoranda, and assist justices in preparing opinions.

2. Appellate Division of Superior Court:
- Unified intermediate appellate court.
- Clerks prepare weekly memos, edit opinions, handle emergent applications, and assist with research projects.

3. Tax Court:
- Focus on local property taxes and Division of Taxation decisions.
- Clerks review and process motions, conduct legal research, and manage case functions.

4. Assignment Judges:
- Judicial head of the vicinage.
- Clerks conduct research, prepare legal memos, manage the docket, and communicate with counsel and staff.

5. Family Division:
- Handles complex cases involving children, youth, spouses, and domestic partners.
- Clerks conduct legal research, assist with remote proceedings, and draft legal opinions and orders.

6. Civil Division:
- Handles disputes involving monetary compensation.
- Clerks prepare bench memoranda, perform legal research, draft legal orders, and manage the motion calendar.

7. Criminal Division:
- Manages cases involving criminal offenses.
- Clerks conduct legal research, assist in drafting jury instructions, manage the motion calendar, and perform case management functions.

8. General Equity (Chancery):
- Handles cases involving non-monetary relief.
- Clerks conduct legal research, review case files, draft orders, and assist with emergent temporary restraining order applications.
