Job Responsibilities
Positions in this series involve a variety of professional legal work in criminal prosecution, including investigation, trial preparation, and legal research. The main responsibilities include:
- Investigating, researching, and preparing cases for prosecution by evaluating evidence, determining the nature of the crime, and establishing justification for prosecution.
- Interviewing witnesses and advising law enforcement officers and the public regarding the issuance of criminal complaints.
- Presenting and prosecuting cases before County courts and the Grand Jury.
- Representing the people of the County at arraignments, preliminary hearings, and trials.
- Negotiating with defense attorneys regarding the disposition or modification of charges.
- Presenting opening statements, interrogating, and cross-examining witnesses, arguing points of law, and making final arguments or summations.
- Conducting legal research and preparing briefs and opinions.
- Training and advising lower-level attorneys in the preparation and presentation of cases.
- Providing vacation and temporary relief as required.
Education and Experience Information
Minimum Requirements:
License: Active membership and good standing with the State Bar of California. Members in good standing who have been assigned a license number but have inactive membership status are welcome to apply, as well as candidates licensed out of state pending California Bar Exam results/license. However, an active California Bar license is required prior to hire.
Experience:
- Deputy District Attorney II: Requires one (1) year of criminal trial experience as an attorney or two (2) years of trial experience as an attorney.
- Deputy District Attorney III: Requires two (2) years of criminal trial experience as an attorney or three (3) years of trial experience as an attorney.
- Deputy District Attorney IV: Requires three (3) years of criminal trial prosecution experience as an attorney or four (4) years of trial experience as an attorney.
Salary Information
- Deputy District Attorney II: - Hourly, $4, - $4, Biweekly, $9, - $10, Monthly, $109, - $120, Annually
- Deputy District Attorney III: $126,464 - $139,568 Annually
- Deputy District Attorney IV: $150,051 - $201,531 Annually
Additional Incentives:
Candidates assigned to the Victorville or Joshua Tree offices may be eligible to receive an additional incentive of $77 per pay period ($2002 annually).
Conditions of Employment
- Assignments may be made to any location in the County depending on the needs of the department.
- Candidates must successfully pass an extensive background investigation, which may include a credit check, fingerprint check, and medical exam.
- Must be an active member in good standing with the State Bar of California at the time of hire and maintain this status to remain employed in this classification.
- San Bernardino County cannot consider candidates who will require visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future.
