Job Title: Fall 2025 Internship Positions for Law Students
Job Responsibilities:
- Conduct legal research and writing to support ongoing cases and advocacy efforts.
- Review and respond to intake letters from clients in institutional settings.
- Participate in case development and investigation, contributing to the building of legal strategies.
- Assist with discovery processes, including document review and preparation.
- Attend client meetings, depositions, and court proceedings when appropriate, under supervision.
- Collaborate with supervising attorneys on various legal matters related to the organization's mission.
- Engage in activities related to legislative and administrative advocacy.
- Provide legal reference materials and referrals to incarcerated individuals.
Education and Experience Information:
- Open to law students seeking semester externships or summer internships.
- Semester externships are typically part-time, with hours determined by law school requirements.
- Summer internships are full-time, generally lasting a minimum of ten weeks.
- Previous approval as a credit-based externship site by multiple law schools.
- Applicants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with their law school’s policies on externships before applying.
- 1Ls without law school grades may apply for summer internships without a transcript.
Salary Information:
- Summer internships are unpaid.
- Students are encouraged to seek external funding through work study programs, law school or foundation public interest fellowships, or similar initiatives.
The organization, **Members Only**, is committed to ensuring equal access to justice for indigent institutionalized persons in Pennsylvania by providing civil legal services to individuals in jails, prisons, detention centers, and state hospitals. With offices in Philadelphia, Lewisburg, and Pittsburgh, PILP engages in direct representation, legislative and administrative advocacy, and provides legal reference materials and referrals to incarcerated individuals. The litigation docket includes cases involving physical and sexual assault, disability rights, transgender rights, freedom of religion, mental health and medical care, and other conditions of confinement. Active cases include class actions related to mental health care, unconstitutional jail conditions, and solitary confinement among others.
