The Allegheny County District Attorney's Office offers a valuable opportunity for law students interested in public service and criminal law to gain hands-on experience through their Fall Certified Legal Internship Program. This internship program is open to law students and applications will open on July 1, 2025 and close on Aug. 8, 2025. The program places interns in various units within the Office, including Crimes Persons, where they will have the opportunity to appear in court under the direct supervision of an Assistant District Attorney. In addition to the listed duties, interns will also have the chance to gain valuable courtroom experience before finishing law school.

The Office of the District Attorney serves as the Chief Law Enforcement Office of the county and accepts referrals from over 100 active police departments. This includes the City of Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, the Allegheny County Police Department, and the Allegheny County Sheriff's Department. The Office is also responsible for approving complaints filed by private citizens. The internship program operates out of the main office located on the third and fourth floors of the Allegheny County Courthouse, as well as offices in downtown Pittsburgh. The Office employs over 100 attorneys with various areas of expertise, and interns are placed in a specific unit based on their skills, interests, and the needs of the Office.

The internship program is administered by Assistant District Attorney Sarah Weikart, and any questions can be directed to her via email. Interns will have the opportunity to engage in legal research and writing, as well as assist attorneys in every aspect of trial and hearing preparation. This may include accompanying attorneys to conduct plea negotiations, jury selection, pre-trial motions, and trials for both jury and non-jury cases.
