Overall Function
As the Lead Counsel for Clean Transportation at Environmental Defense Fund, you will play a crucial role in developing and implementing strategies to reduce climate and health harming pollution from the transportation sector. In this two-year fixed term position, you will work closely with a team of attorneys, scientists, economists, and policy specialists to advocate for and advance climate and health-protective policies before federal and state policy makers, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Department of Treasury, and the California Air Resources Board. You will also have the opportunity to collaborate with external partners and allies, and serve as a key influential negotiator to advance our goals.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and implement litigation strategies in highly complex cases to advance EDF's climate, clean energy, and health priorities.
Represent EDF in litigation defending and advancing climate and health-protective policies.
Advocate for and advance climate and health-protective policies before federal and state policy makers.
Lead the preparation of detailed legal and policy submissions and comments.
Participate in advancing EDF's DEI goals.
Develop and maintain strategic partnerships with a wide range of stakeholders.
Analyze key legal authorities and develop legal memoranda.
Collaborate with EDF technical experts and consultants to develop reports and whitepapers.
Advise, supervise, and mentor junior staff and legal interns.
Assist with fundraising efforts.
Coordinate and collaborate with the Legal & Regulatory team and EDF.
Maintain strong relationships with allies and represent EDF at internal and external events.
Additional relevant responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
8+ years of experience in the Clean Air Act practice area.
Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA-accredited law school and active bar membership in good standing.
Demonstrated success in advocating for state and federal policy reforms.
Tax law experience or familiarity with IRA transportation credit provisions preferred.
Ability to think strategically and work in a fast-paced environment.
Excellent communication, presentation, and negotiation skills.
Detail-oriented, proactive, and highly organized.
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
Demonstrated self-awareness, cultural competency, and inclusivity.
Ability to recognize and capitalize on political opportunities.
Experience developing innovative solutions to complex problems.
Ability to manage competing priorities and adapt to shifting strategies.
Ability to represent EDF in litigation and before senior government officials.
Strong ability to work independently and collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team.
Ability and willingness to travel up to 5-10% of the time.
Salary Information
The salary range for this position is $153,000 - $165,000 USD per year.

This is a two-year fixed term position with the opportunity for extension.
